Amazon Prime Video Raises Price of Ad-Free Tier in U.S.

Prime Video Adjusts Tier Pricing and Enhances Features

Amazon has announced a significant adjustment to its ad free subscription tier in the United States. This change will take effect on April 10. The service previously known as the ad free subscription tier will be rebranded as Prime Video Ultra. Its monthly price will increase from US$2.99 to US$4.99. This update signifies a shift in the service offerings and its market positioning. The availability of the Prime Video Ultra tier remains exclusive to customers located in the United States at this time.

Enhanced Features for Ultra Subscribers

Subscribers to the newly named Prime Video Ultra tier will experience several feature enhancements. The number of concurrent streams available will expand to five, an increase from the previous limit of three simultaneous streams. Download capacity for offline viewing is also substantially boosted, allowing for 100 downloads, a considerable rise from the former 25 download limit. Furthermore, exclusive access to 4K or Ultra High Definition streaming will now be a distinct offering of this premium tier, providing a superior visual experience for its members.

Updates for Standard Prime Video Offerings

Changes are also being implemented for the default Prime Video services, which are included as part of regular Amazon Prime subscriptions. Users will find that they can now view content on four concurrent streams, which is an increase from the prior three stream allowance. The allocation for offline viewing downloads will also be expanded to 50, doubling the previous capacity of 25 downloads. An additional enhancement for default Prime Video services is the introduction of Dolby Vision, promising an improved viewing experience with advanced display technology for all subscribers.

Context of Recent Ad Integration

The introduction of advertisements for most Prime Video content commenced in 2024. This change affected regular subscribers who access the service through their Amazon Prime membership. However, it is important to note that content that has been purchased or rented separately by users remains exempt from these advertising insertions, preserving an ad free experience for those specific transactions. The Prime Video Ultra tier specifically targets customers seeking a comprehensive ad free environment across the broader content library.

Prior Amazon Prime Subscription Adjustments

These recent adjustments follow earlier price changes for the overarching Amazon Prime service. In February 2022, Amazon raised the annual subscription price of its Amazon Prime service from US$119 to US$139. Concurrently, the monthly subscription price also saw an increase, moving from US$12.99 to US$14.99. At the time of these price revisions, the company communicated its strategic intent to triple the quantity of original shows and movies that would be debuted on the Amazon Prime Video streaming platform. This prior statement offered insight into the companys long term content development goals.

Strategic Vision for Global Anime Content

Amazon Prime Video is also setting ambitious goals for its content strategy globally. Gaurav Gandhi, who serves as Prime Video Vice President for the Asia Pacific and Australia and New Zealand regions, expressed a clear vision for the streaming service. During the "Prime Video Presents International Originals" presentation held in London on February 12, Mr. Gandhi stated his desire for Prime Video to become the foremost destination for anime content around the world. This indicates a strong focus on expanding the anime library and attracting a global audience passionate about the genre.

Recent Organizational Restructuring

In a related development, both Amazon Prime and Amazon owned Twitch underwent significant workforce reductions earlier in January 2024. Reports indicated that several hundred employees were impacted by these layoffs across the two entities. Mike Hopkins, who holds the position of Senior Vice President for Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, addressed employees via email regarding these organizational changes. His message emphasized that the companies were undertaking these actions with the aim to prioritize their investments for the long term success of their respective businesses.
