From Manga to Anime: "From Overshadowed to Overpowered" Coming This July

Square Enix has announced that Kentarou's manga adaptation of Arata Shiraishi's light novel series, "From Overshadowed to Overpowered" (Rakudai Kenja no Gakuin Musō: Nidome no Tensei, S-Rank Cheat Majutsushi Bōkenroku), will be receiving a television anime adaptation. The anime is set to premiere in July, adapting the manga version of the story with its slightly altered title.

Celebratory Illustrations

To commemorate the announcement, Kentarou, the artist behind the manga, created a special illustration. Hisashi Ishii, the anime's director, also contributed an illustration to celebrate the occasion.

Cast Announcement

The anime adaptation has revealed its main cast members. Shūichirō Umeda will be playing the protagonist, Ephtal. Reo Osanai will be taking on the role of the heroine, Anastasia. Haruka Shiraishi will be portraying Marin, the head of the magical academy.

Story Overview

Comikey, which is releasing the manga in English, describes the story as follows: Ephtal, originally from modern Earth, is reincarnated into a world where magic exists. He dedicates his life to mastering magic. However, he discovers he has no talent for it and dies in despair. He is then reincarnated again, 400 years later, retaining his knowledge and power. He resolves to reach the peak of magic once more.

Production Team

Hisashi Ishii, known for his work on "Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear," "I'm Quitting Heroing," and "The Unaware Atelier Master," will be directing the anime at EMT Squared. Deko Akao, who has worked on "Higehiro," "Komi Can't Communicate," and "Flying Witch," is supervising the series' scripts. Hideki Furukawa, whose previous works include "WATAMOTE," "Strike The Blood III onwards," and "Ayakashi Triangle," is designing the characters.

Manga Origins

Kentarou launched the manga adaptation on Square Enix's Manga UP! website in September 2019. Square Enix published the eighth compiled book volume of the manga in June 2025.

Light Novel Origins

Arata Shiraishi originally published the story as a web novel. Kadokawa published the first print volume in October 2019, featuring illustrations by uodenim. Kadokawa published the eighth novel volume in March 2022.
