Square Enix Announces Anime Adaptation of "From Overshadowed to Overpowered: Second Reincarnation of a Talentless Sage"

Square Enix has launched an official website for the television anime adaptation of Arata Shiraishi's light novel series, "Rakudai Kenja no Gakuin Musou: Nidome no Tensei, S-Rank Cheat Majutsushi Boukenroku," also known as "From Overshadowed to Overpowered: Second Reincarnation of a Talentless Sage." The announcement includes the unveiling of the main cast, staff, and a teaser visual. The anime is scheduled to premiere in July 2026.

Cast Details

The anime adaptation has confirmed the voice actors for its main characters. Shuuichirou Umeda, known for his role in "Vigilante: Boku no Hero Academia Illegals," will voice Ephtal. Anastasia will be voiced by Reo Osanai, who previously worked on "Isekai Nonbiri Nouka." Haruka Shiraishi, recognized for her role in "Clevatess," will voice Merlin.

Staff Announcement

The staff responsible for bringing the anime to life has also been announced. Hisashi Ishii, the director of "Yuusha, Yamemasu," will be directing the anime. Deko Akao, who handled series composition for "Saigo ni Hitotsu dake Onegai shitemo Yoroshii deshou ka," will be in charge of series composition. Hideki Furukawa, the character designer for "Strike the Blood III," will be designing the characters for the anime. The animation production will be handled by EMT Squared.

Light Novel Origins

Arata Shiraishi began writing the adventure fantasy story on the Shousetsuka ni Narou website in 2018. Kadokawa subsequently published the light novel with illustrations by Denim Uo under the Sneaker Bunko imprint. The light novel series spans eight volumes, which were released from October 2019 to March 2022. The series boasts a cumulative circulation of 1.8 million copies.

Manga Adaptation

A manga adaptation of the light novel, illustrated by Kentarou, began its serialization on the Manga UP! website in September 2019. Square Enix released the eighth volume of the manga in June 2025. The manga is available in English on the Manga UP! and Comikey platforms.

Synopsis of the Story

The story follows Ephtal, the Sage of Wind, who is a reincarnated individual from modern Earth. Reincarnated into a world where magic exists, he dedicates his life to mastering magic. However, he discovers that he lacks any inherent magical talent, leading to his demise. Ephtal is reincarnated again, 400 years later, retaining his knowledge and power. He sets his sights once more on reaching the pinnacle of magic. Surprisingly, he finds that magic has significantly declined in this new era. In a time where potent spells are scarce, his once-talentless self is now exceptionally powerful. The narrative chronicles Ephtal's journey from being powerless to becoming an unmatched mage.
