Studio Ghibli Wins Asturias Award for Creativity

Studio Ghibli's Latest International Honor

The legendary animation powerhouse, Studio Ghibli, has been bestowed with a prestigious accolade, the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities. This significant recognition, awarded by Spain's Princess of Asturias Foundation, highlights Ghibli's unparalleled ability to transform creativity into profound knowledge and effective communication. The award specifically celebrates works that foster and advance humanistic activities and social communication, a testament to Ghibli's enduring global impact through its beloved films like Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, and The Boy and the Heron.

A Legacy of Imagination and Empathy

The jury of the Princess of Asturias Award lauded Studio Ghibli for its "highly imaginative artisanal process" and its "universal stories brimming with sensitivity and humanistic values." These values, central to Ghibli's narrative fabric, include friendship, empathy, tolerance, and a deep respect for both people and nature. The foundation further praised Ghibli's films for their ability to "transcend generations and borders," establishing them as vital references for a "globalized society and the protection of the environment." The studio's unique approach to storytelling, which "celebrates the beauty of the everyday" and integrates "moments of silence and contemplation," was also specifically acknowledged, underscoring the studio's distinctive artistic vision and its capacity to connect with audiences worldwide on a deeply emotional and intellectual level.

The Minds Behind the Magic

This honor also shines a spotlight on the brilliant minds who have shaped Studio Ghibli's legacy. Founders Isao Takahata, Toshio Suzuki, and Hayao Miyazaki were recognized for their monumental contributions. Hayao Miyazaki, in particular, has directed many of Ghibli's most iconic works, guiding the studio's artistic direction with his visionary storytelling. His illustrious career, which began with television anime series such as Lupin III and Future Boy Conan, led to his directorial debut with Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro in 1979. Before co-founding Studio Ghibli with Takahata, Miyazaki adapted his Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind manga into a successful anime film in 1984. Within Ghibli, he helmed masterpieces including Laputa: Castle in the Sky, Kiki's Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle, and The Wind Rises, alongside smaller, experimental projects.

Global Recognition for Timeless Art

Studio Ghibli's recognition from the Princess of Asturias Foundation is part of a growing wave of international honors. Earlier in 2024, the 77th Cannes International Film Festival presented Studio Ghibli with the Honorary Palme d'Or, a rare collective award. Concurrently, Time Magazine named director Hayao Miyazaki among the world's 100 most influential people of 2024. This consistent high-level recognition underscores the studio's profound and lasting influence on global culture and animation. The Princess of Asturias Awards, which celebrate excellence across various fields, previously honored other notable Japanese figures, including author Haruki Murakami for Literature in 2023 and game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, known for creating beloved franchises like Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda, with the Communication and Humanities award in 2012.

A Ceremony of Honor

Studio Ghibli's award, one of eight conferred in the foundation's 46th year, emerged from a competitive field of 48 candidatures representing 20 different nationalities for the Communication and Humanities category alone. The Princess of Asturias Awards overall acknowledge "the scientific, technical, cultural, social and humanitarian work carried out at an international level by individuals, institutions or groups of individuals or institutions." A grand ceremony will be held in October, presided over by Their Majesties The King and Queen of Spain, accompanied by Their Royal Highnesses The Princess of Asturias and Infanta Sofía, to formally present these distinguished awards. This event will further solidify Studio Ghibli's place among the world's most influential cultural institutions.
