Rooster Fighter Episode 9: More Than Just Pecking Order

Imagine the pure, unadulterated envy I felt witnessing Elizabeth the chicken's affectionate reunion with her human. Not only do they converse fluently (a skill in Chickenese I, unfortunately, lack), but she actually gives him cuddles! My own feathered companions tend to reserve their 'cuddles' for moments of resignation when caught, always with the lurking possibility of an eyeball-shaped snack. Yet, the Rooster Fighter crew stands apart; they're the kind of good eggs who'd only peck your eyes out if you genuinely deserved it.

Indeed, they are so honorable that they're prepared to put their lives on the line. Morio, having once sacrificed himself for them, now faces a mind-warging threat from the new Devil villains. The gang is determined to return his favor. We learn, courtesy of a surprisingly polite octopus demon, that the Devils use a parasite to control Demons. These parasites leave the Demon's mind and heart intact, but hijack their physical form. This revelation, however, complicates rescuing Morio, as Keiji's powerful kokekoko attack would destroy his friend along with the parasite.

Navigating Satire and Sincerity

I've often pondered the true tone of Rooster Fighter. Does it want us to take it seriously, or is it pure shonen satire? While it frequently leans into bombastic themes of Sacrifice, Heart, and Friendship in a way that feels like a loving parody, it often veers into moments of surprising earnestness that give me pause. Sharing this episode with a newcomer, their giggles confirmed that the show's inherent humor, especially with actual chickens as protagonists, remains potent. It's funny how quickly one can accept the bizarre premise the more they watch, making a fresh perspective invaluable.

However, nothing in my extensive anime viewing history, not even shrinking buses into human bodies, could have prepared me for the sheer, visceral grossness of this episode's final act. There's a particular kind of discomfort in watching a character declare they're entering an opening that looks suspiciously like a rear orifice, only to then spend five minutes forcing their way through increasingly tight, squelchy vasculature. Add in being doused in mystery bodily fluids and constant retching about the smell, and it’s a truly stomach-churning experience. It's like a reverse blackhead extraction, more visceral and horrifying than words can adequately convey. Apologies if those mental images now haunt you.

Piyoko's Perilous Plunge

Only Piyoko, being the smallest, can undertake this perilous journey into the fleshy abyss. Her attempt to defeat a formidable enemy with nothing but a carpentry nail feels initially almost too visually silly to work. Yet, the scene’s absurdity unexpectedly pays off. The action suddenly crescendos, building to a tension that snaps with such force, you can't help but gasp aloud. I won't spoil the specifics, but it's a monumental cliffhanger, jarringly brought to a halt by an ill-timed commercial break.

Overall, this episode is a solid entry, despite some pacing issues and a Devil storyline that feels a bit hastily constructed. Its true triumph lies in how it serves as a powerful catalyst for Piyoko's character transformation. That alone, along with the memorable, albeit weird, butthole-like portal, makes the entire conflict worthwhile.

Rooster Fighter continues to air, proving that even a gross-out adventure can have heart and deliver shocking finales.
