Moonlight Mile Manga Resumes Serialization With New Print Edition

Moonlight Mile Manga Returns with New Chapters and Full-Color Edition

Yasuo Ohtagaki's space-themed manga, Moonlight Mile, is making a comeback after a hiatus. Ohtagaki announced on his X account that new chapters of the manga will be available for purchase as e-books starting April 24. The company No9 (Number Nine) will also digitally re-release volume 24 with a brand-new full-color edition, marking a significant update for fans of the series.

Digital and Print Release of Volume 24

No9's commitment to Moonlight Mile extends beyond the digital realm. The company plans to publish volume 24 in print later this year. Ryƫji Umeno (umegrafix) is returning to handle the coloring for this full-color edition, ensuring a visually stunning experience for readers. Notably, only the first 23 volumes of Moonlight Mile had previously received a print edition, making this release a special occasion for collectors and long-time fans.

Brief Resumption in 2021

Before this official announcement, Moonlight Mile had a brief serialization on pixiv starting on December 25, 2021. A few chapters were released at that time, offering a glimpse of what was to come. This small revival served as a precursor to the current, more significant return of the series.

Hiatus and Other Works

Ohtagaki had placed Moonlight Mile on hiatus back in 2011 to focus on his other successful manga, Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt. This strategic decision allowed him to fully dedicate his energy to the Gundam project, which has garnered its own dedicated following. Now, with the Gundam Thunderbolt series well-established, Ohtagaki is able to revisit and continue the Moonlight Mile saga.

Moonlight Mile: A Space Adventure

Moonlight Mile originally launched in Shogakukan's Big Comic Superior magazine in 2000. Shogakukan published the manga's 24th compiled book volume in 2023, showcasing the series' longevity and continued popularity. The manga's compelling storyline and unique blend of adventure and science fiction elements have captivated readers for over two decades.

Anime Adaptation and Story Summary

The Moonlight Mile manga inspired a television anime adaptation in 2007. ADV Films and later Funimation released the anime in North America, introducing the story to a wider audience. Funimation's synopsis describes the tale as follows:

"Daredevils Goro Saruwatari and Jack “Lostman” Woodbridge climbed every daunting peak on planet Earth, but they couldn't quench their desire to go even higher. Now, the adventurers vow to conquer space no matter what the cost. And when a precious source of energy is discovered on Mars, Goro and Lostman suddenly find their dreams within reach. They blast off for the far reaches of the galaxy seeking fame and fast women, but discover that hitching a ride on a rocket can get you burned. Undaunted, the astronauts throw caution to the wind and learn that the distance between a hero and his destiny is only a Moonlight Mile."

This summary highlights the adventurous spirit and high stakes involved in the story, as the protagonists push the boundaries of human exploration and face the challenges of space travel.

Ohtagaki's Other Works: Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt

In addition to Moonlight Mile, Yasuo Ohtagaki is also known for his work on Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt. He launched this manga in Shogakukan's Big Comic Superior magazine in March 2012. The Gundam Thunderbolt manga has also been adapted into two original net anime series, each of which received a compilation film. Ohtagaki further expands the Gundam universe with a Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt Gaiden spinoff manga. His dedication to both Moonlight Mile and Gundam Thunderbolt showcases his versatility as a manga artist.
