Karuho Shiina Returns with New Manga After 18 Years

Karuho Shiina, the creator of the beloved series Kimi ni Todoke - From Me to You, has launched a new manga titled Gusts and Beats (Toppu to Beat). This marks Shiina's first new series in 18 years, since the debut of Kimi ni Todoke in 2006. The manga premiered in Shueisha's Bessatsu Margaret magazine in March 2024.

Manga Plus Adds English Translation

MANGA Plus has made Gusts and Beats available in English on their platform. As of Thursday, 19 chapters of the manga are accessible to readers. This allows fans worldwide to experience Shiina's latest work.

Story Summary

The story revolves around Niike, a high school freshman known for being forgetful and overly helpful. She is asked to visit her classmate Nemoto, who has been absent from school. Nemoto supposedly lives alone, but Niike senses a lingering presence in his house.

A Digital First

Shiina is employing a completely digital workflow for the production of Gusts and Beats. This is a first for her and may represent a new direction in her creative process.

Kimi ni Todoke Legacy

Shiina's previous work, Kimi ni Todoke, achieved significant success. The series ran in Bessatsu Margaret from 2006 to November 2017. Shueisha published 30 volumes of the manga, concluding the series in March 2018. Furthermore, Shiina created a spinoff manga titled Kimi ni Todoke Bangaihen: Unmei no Hito, which ran from April 2018 to May 2022.

Popularity and Adaptations

Kimi ni Todoke has sold over 36 million copies, including digital versions. Viz Media publishes the English version of the manga. The series has inspired two television anime seasons, which were released on home video by NIS America. A live-action film adaptation was released in Japan in 2010. Netflix debuted a live-action series adaptation in March 2023.

New Anime Season

Kimi ni Todoke received a third television anime season. The new season, the first in 13 years, streamed exclusively on Netflix worldwide in August 2024. This demonstrates the continuing popularity of the series.
