Yuusei Matsui's historical adventure manga, Nige Jouzu no Wakagimi (The Elusive Samurai), reached its conclusion in the 12th issue of this year's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. The 238th and final chapter marked the end of the manga's five-year serialization, a journey that began in January 2021.

Matsui's manga captivated readers with its unique blend of historical fiction and adventure. The story follows Tokiyuki Houjou, a young boy thrust into a world of political intrigue and danger after his family's shogunate is overthrown. His journey of survival and eventual rebellion resonated with fans, making Nige Jouzu no Wakagimi a popular title in Weekly Shonen Jump.

Final Volumes and Circulation Numbers

Shueisha, the publisher of Weekly Shonen Jump, released the 23rd volume of the manga on December 4. The 24th volume is scheduled to ship on March 4, with further releases planned for May 1, August 4, and October 2. The series has achieved a cumulative circulation of 4.5 million copies, highlighting its widespread appeal.

International Availability

VIZ Media has been publishing the manga simultaneously in English on their Shonen Jump website, allowing international fans to follow the story as it unfolds. The 18th volume was released on January 6, and the 19th volume is set to go on sale on March 3, providing English-speaking audiences with access to the series.

Anime Adaptation and Recognition

The manga was adapted into a 12-episode television anime series by CloverWorks, which aired in Summer 2024. Crunchyroll simulcasted the anime with subtitles and dubs in multiple languages, further expanding the reach of Nige Jouzu no Wakagimi. A second season is scheduled to broadcast in Summer 2026, promising more adventures for Tokiyuki and his companions. The series also garnered critical acclaim, winning the 69th Shogakukan Manga Awards in 2024.

Nige Jouzu no Wakagimi is set during the Nanboku-chou period of Japanese history. The story revolves around eight-year-old Tokiyuki Houjou, the heir to the Kamakura shogunate. Lacking any particular talent except for hide-and-seek, his life takes a dramatic turn when Takauji Ashikaga usurps power. Rescued by a prophetic priest, Tokiyuki escapes and begins a journey to reclaim his family's legacy. He must evade enemies and gather allies to restore the Kamakura Shogunate. It is a story of resilience, depicting how a young boy, once overlooked, altered the course of history through his strategic retreats and eventual rise.
