Iron Wok Jan! Anime Adaptation Announced
The culinary battle is about to begin anew, as Shinji Saijyo's beloved cooking manga, Iron Wok Jan!, is getting a television anime adaptation. The official website recently unveiled a teaser promotional video, a captivating teaser visual, the main cast members, and the talented staff who are bringing this fiery kitchen competition to life.
Cast and Characters
Kikunosuke Toya will be stepping into the shoes of the titular Jan Akiyama, the passionate and competitive young chef. Ikumi Hasegawa will be portraying Kiriko Gobancho, the granddaughter of the restaurant owner and a formidable chef in her own right. Kohei Amasaki will be lending his voice to Takao Okonogi. The renowned Kenjiro Tsuda will be narrating the anime, adding an extra layer of gravitas to the culinary proceedings.
Production Team
Makoto Uezu, known for their work on Akame ga KILL!, Assassination Classroom, Scum's Wish, and KonoSuba – God’s blessing on this wonderful world!!, is in charge of the series scripts. Masako Matsumoto, whose credits include Aldnoah.Zero and Overtake!, is designing the characters and also serving as the chief animation director. Tomoki Kikuya, the composer behind Bocchi the Rock! and Oblivion Battery, is composing the music.
The additional staff members contributing to the anime's creation are Atsushi Okuda and Chihiro Hanamura as Cuisine Animation Directors, Ryuuichi Makino as Action Animator, Ken Naito as Art Director, Mariko Shinohara as Color Key Artist, Ryosuke Tsuda as Compositing Director of Photography, Mitsutaka Iguchi as CG Director, Shota Migiyama as Editor, Takako Sato as Cuisine Supervision and Coordinator, Naoya Higuchi as Cooking Science Supervision, Jin Aketagawa as Sound Director, and Masami Baba as Sound Effects.
Ei Aoki, acclaimed for their direction on Fate/Zero, Aldnoah.Zero, Girls Bravo, and Wandering Son, is directing the anime at TROYCA. The anime is slated to debut this year, promising a feast for the eyes and ears.
Story Synopsis
Iron Wok Jan! centers on Jan Akiyama, a brilliant young chef who works at a top-class restaurant. He constantly challenges Kiriko Gobancho, the granddaughter of the restaurant's owner, who is also a great chef. Their culinary philosophies clash, as Kiriko believes that food should be made with the customer in mind, while Jan believes that cooking should be used for competition. This rivalry fuels the series, creating a dynamic and engaging narrative.
Manga History
Shinji Saijyo's original Iron Wok Jan! manga ran in Akita Shoten's Weekly Shonen Champion magazine from 1995 to 2000, spanning 27 volumes. ComicsOne published the first 13 volumes of the series in English from 2002 to 2005, before DrMaster acquired the license and published the remaining volumes from 2005 to 2007. Saijyo also published the Tetsunabe no Jan! R: Cho jo Sakusen manga in Weekly Shonen Champion, which was compiled into 10 volumes. He further expanded the universe with the Tetsupai no Jan! spinoff manga in Takeshobo's Kindai Mahjong magazine in August 2015, with Bingo Morihashi credited for the script. The spinoff concluded with its seventh and final volume in March 2018. Saijyo launched the successor manga Tetsunabe no Jan!! 2nd in 2017, which ended with its seventh volume in 2020.
