Cosmic Princess Kaguya! Extends Theatrical Run

Shingo Yamashita's Cosmic Princess Kaguya! anime film is enjoying extended success in Japanese theaters. Originally planned for a limited one-week run, the film will now continue showing in eight additional theaters beyond the initial end date of February 27. This extension comes as a welcome surprise to fans who have embraced the unique take on the classic tale.

Music Video Bonus

Adding to the excitement, screenings from February 27 onward will include a special treat for moviegoers. The cast's cover of BUMP OF CHICKEN's popular song "ray" will play as a music video after the film concludes. This addition provides an extra incentive for fans to experience the movie in theaters and enjoy a fresh musical interpretation.

Initial Theatrical Success

The film's initial theatrical run, which began on February 20, proved to be exceptionally popular. Tickets sold out quickly at many locations, leading some theaters to increase the number of daily screenings to over ten times their original schedule. This surge in demand demonstrates the film's strong appeal and the enthusiasm of audiences to see Yamashita's vision on the big screen.

Story Synopsis

For those unfamiliar, Cosmic Princess Kaguya! tells a modern and imaginative story centered around a virtual realm called Tsukuyomi. The protagonist, Iroha Sakayori, is a busy 17-year-old student who finds solace in watching a popular streamer named Yachiyo Runami, the administrator of Tsukuyomi. Iroha frequents this online space, where people can live different lives and express their creativity. One day, Iroha discovers a baby emerging from a shining telephone pole. She takes the infant home, and to her astonishment, the baby rapidly grows into a girl her own age, who claims to be Princess Kaguya.

The Streaming Princess

The grown-up Kaguya has a somewhat self-indulgent personality. At her request, Iroha helps Kaguya start streaming in Tsukuyomi. With Iroha as the producer and songwriter and Kaguya as the streamer and singer, the two become closer, not knowing that dangerous forces are lurking, seeking to reclaim Kaguya and return her to the moon. This film presents the tale of Princess Kaguya in a way never seen before.

Voice Cast

The film boasts a talented voice cast, including Yuko Natsuyoshi as Kaguya, Anna Nagase as Iroha, and Saori Hayami as Yachiyo. Rie Kugimiya lends her voice to Fushi, a fluffy sea slug who serves as Yachiyo's partner. The cast brings depth and emotion to the characters.

Production Team

Shingo Yamashita, known for his work on Pokemon: Twilight Wings and the opening animations for Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man, made his feature-length directorial debut with Cosmic Princess Kaguya! This project is a collaboration between his Studio Chromato and Studio Colorido. Hechima and Akihiro Nagae served as character designers, with Hechima responsible for the Tsukuyomi designs and Nagae handling the real-world character designs.

Musical Contributions

Saori Hayami, who voices Yachiyo, also performs the theme song "Ex-Otogibanashi," composed by Ryo of supercell. The film also features songs by various Vocaloid producers, including Ryo (supercell), kz (Livetune), 40mP, HoneyWorks, Aqu3ra, and yuigot, showcasing the film's blend of traditional storytelling with modern musical styles.

Adaptations

The world of Cosmic Princess Kaguya! has expanded beyond the film. A manga adaptation by Taro Yoneda launched in Kadokawa's Comptiq magazine. Additionally, Naruto Kiriyama penned a novel adaptation of the film with illustrations by Asao Urata, supervised by Yamashita. These adaptations provide different perspectives on the story.
