Cosmic Princess Kaguya! Anime Film Gets Theatrical Release

Shingo Yamashita's Cosmic Princess Kaguya Gets Limited Theatrical Run

Shingo Yamashita's anime film, Cosmic Princess Kaguya, also known as Cho Kaguya-hime, is set to grace Japanese theaters for a limited one-week engagement starting February 20. This announcement comes via the official YouTube channel for the film. A video showcasing the ending theme, a cover of BUMP OF CHICKEN's song "ray" performed by the cast, accompanies the announcement.

Netflix Streaming Release

Prior to this theatrical release, Cosmic Princess Kaguya became available for streaming on Netflix on January 22. This wider availability allowed audiences outside of Japan to experience Yamashita's unique take on the classic tale.

Story Synopsis

Netflix offers a description of the film's narrative: The story is set in Tsukuyomi, a virtual realm where dreams converge. Iroha Sakayori, a 17-year-old student in Tokyo, juggles her studies with a part-time job. She finds solace in watching Yachiyo Runami, a popular streamer who manages Tsukuyomi. Iroha frequents Tsukuyomi, embracing its freedom to live different lives and support Yachiyo. One day, she discovers a baby emerging from a shining telephone pole. Unable to leave her, Iroha takes the infant home, only to watch her rapidly age into a girl her own age. This girl identifies herself as Princess Kaguya. Kaguya develops a rather self-centered personality. At Kaguya's prompting, Iroha assists her in streaming within Tsukuyomi. As Iroha produces and writes songs, and Kaguya streams and sings, their bond deepens. Unbeknownst to them, forces are waiting to reclaim Kaguya for the moon.

The Cast

The film features a voice cast including Yuko Natsuyoshi as Kaguya, Anna Nagase as Iroha, and Saori Hayami as Yachiyo. Rie Kugimiya lends her voice to Fushi, Yachiyo's fluffy sea slug companion.

Production Details

Shingo Yamashita, known for his work on Pokemon: Twilight Wings and the opening animations for Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, and the 2022 Urusei Yatsura series, makes his feature-length directorial debut with this film. The project is a collaborative effort between Studio Chromato and Studio Colorido. Hechima, known for The Idolmaster Gakuen, and Akihiro Nagae, associated with Drifting Home, designed the characters. Hechima is responsible for the Tsukuyomi designs, while Nagae handled the character designs for the real world.

Theme Song and Music

Saori Hayami, as Yachiyo, performs the theme song "Ex-Otogibanashi," composed by Ryo of supercell fame. The film also incorporates songs from Vocaloid producers Ryo (supercell), kz (Livetune), 40mP, HoneyWorks, Aqu3ra, and yuigot.

Adaptations

The film has inspired a manga adaptation by Taro Yoneda, which began serialization in Kadokawa's Comptiq magazine on January 9. Naruto Kiriyama has also written a novelization of the film, featuring illustrations by Asao Urata. The novel was released on January 30, with Yamashita supervising the project.
