Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. World Stage has already made its mark on current-generation consoles and PC. The game launched on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam on October 30. For PC gamers, the Steam release was a welcome free upgrade for owners of the base Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. This move ensured that existing fans could immediately enjoy the latest enhancements without additional cost. Owners of Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown on PlayStation 4 were also offered a discount to purchase Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. World Stage. Furthermore, any DLC packs purchased for the PS4 version can be carried over to the PS5 game, a feature that benefits long-time players of the series.
Nintendo Switch 2 Announcement and Beta Test
The excitement doesn't stop there. SEGA's YouTube channel recently unveiled a trailer for Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. World Stage on the Nintendo Switch 2. The game is slated to launch on the new console on March 26, promising to bring the classic fighting experience to a new audience. To prepare for the launch, an open beta test for the Switch 2 version is scheduled from February 18-23. This beta period will allow players to test the game, provide feedback, and ensure a smooth release.
New Features and Enhancements
Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. World Stage comes packed with new features and improvements designed to enhance the overall gaming experience. The new version includes a single-player mode for players who enjoy honing their skills offline. Online matches also feature rollback netcode, which reduces input lag and provides a smoother, more responsive online experience. Ryu ga Gotoku Studio, known for developing the Like a Dragon/Yakuza games, is handling the development of this new version. The studio has brought its expertise to the game's graphics, featuring new character models, enhancements to the levels, and cinematic improvements. The game runs up to 4K resolution at 60 frames per second.
A Legacy of Virtua Fighter
The Virtua Fighter series has a rich history dating back to 1993 when the first installment was released in arcades. The series is famous for its three-button punch/kick/block control system. Over the years, SEGA has released five main installments, with the latest being Virtua Fighter 5 in arcades in 2006. Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown, the latest version, was released in 2010 and later on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2012.
Previous Releases and Updates
Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. initially launched on PC via Steam in January 2024. Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown, a remake of Virtua Fighter 5 in Ryu ga Gotoku's Dragon Engine, was released on PS4 in June 2021. This version received a "ver 2.0" update that upgraded the game to the Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. version.
Future Projects
Ryu ga Gotoku Studio is also working on a new game project for the Virtua Fighter franchise. This indicates that SEGA is committed to the series' future.
Anime Adaptation
The Virtua Fighter franchise also received a television anime adaptation in 1995. The anime is available for streaming on Tubi TV in English. Media Blasters released the anime on VHS volumes from 2000 to 2001 and on DVD in 2003.
