Award Winning Novel

The novel Sparks of Tomorrow received an honorable mention in the full length novel category at the 8th Kyoto Animation Awards in May 2017. This achievement highlights the quality and potential of the story, solidifying its appeal to audiences. The entry was the only one to win any of the awards available that year, a testament to its unique charm. Kyoto Animation's KA Esuma Bunko label published the novel in August 2018, making it available to readers. Kazumi Ikeda illustrated the novel, while Momoka Nagatani is credited with art and background.

Storyline Overview

The story is set in the summer of 1907, the 40th year of the Meiji era. Inako Momokawa, a 15 year old girl, lives in the Fushimi area of Kyoto. She is the second daughter of a sake brewer and struggles to find success in her endeavors, often facing criticism from her father. Inako finds solace in her prayers to the gods. One day, while visiting Fushimi Inari shrine, she encounters Kihachi Sakamoto, a free spirited young man. Kihachi dismisses the gods and enthusiastically embraces the coming age of electricity. The topic of marriage arises unexpectedly in Inako's household. Her father unilaterally makes decisions for her future, leading her to despair. It is then that Kihachi awakens Inako's desire to escape her family's expectations. The only way to prevent the marriage is to locate a rare book called the "Electrical Catalog." This book contains Kihachi's childhood predictions about electricity, but his older brother Seiroku took it, and its current location is unknown. Together, Inako and Kihachi embark on a journey across Kyoto and Shiga prefectures in search of the book.
