New Nao Emoto Manga: Mokuyōbi ni wa Cocoa o

A beloved novel about quiet cafe moments is getting a beautiful manga adaptation by none other than Nao Emoto. Fans of heartfelt slice-of-life stories and Emoto's distinctive art style have a new series to look forward to, as the adaptation of Michiko Aoyama's "Mokuyōbi ni wa Cocoa o" (Cocoa on Thursdays) officially launched on Tuesday across Takarajimasha's Takarajima Sugoi! Web and Liniere fashion and lifestyle magazine websites.

Step Inside the Cafe

The original "Mokuyōbi ni wa Cocoa o" novel, first released in August 2017, paints a serene yet intriguing picture centered around a charming cafe. The story unfolds from the perspective of a barista who regularly observes a particular patron. Every Thursday, without fail, a mysterious woman enters the cafe, always chooses the same seat, orders a comforting cup of cocoa, and diligently writes a letter. This ritual continues until one day, the barista notices a shift in her demeanor, hinting at a change in her usual routine. It is a tale that promises subtle emotions and gentle observations, exploring the quiet narratives that unfold in everyday life.

Michiko Aoyama later expanded this universe with a related novel, "Itsumo no Mokuyōbi," released in August 2022, suggesting a rich world for Emoto to draw inspiration from.

Nao Emoto's Illustrious Career

Nao Emoto is a highly respected and prolific manga artist, celebrated for her ability to bring diverse narratives to life. This new project adds another compelling title to her already impressive portfolio. Just recently, on May 1, Emoto also launched a manga adaptation of Shinkoshoto's "Maryoku Zero no Saikyō Kenja ~Mahō Riron o Kiwametara, Sekai Saikyō ni Natteita~" (The Strongest Sage With Zero Magic Power ~Once I Advanced Magical Theory, I Became the Strongest~), showcasing her versatility across genres.

Many will recognize Emoto's name from her work on "O Maidens in Your Savage Season" (Araburu Kisetsu no Otome-domo yo), which she drew alongside author Mari Okada. This manga, which ran from December 2016 to September 2019 in Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine, garnered significant acclaim and even inspired a television anime adaptation that premiered in July 2019. Kodansha USA Publishing has released the manga in English, allowing a wider audience to enjoy it.

Her talents extend beyond manga adaptations, as Emoto was also the character designer for the "Josee, The Tiger and the Fish" anime film, which opened in Japan in December 2020. She subsequently drew the manga adaptation of the film, which Yen Press licensed for English release.

Emoto also created the romance manga "Forget Me Not," serialized from 2013 to 2016, inspired by Mag Hsu's Taiwanese novel Mǎzimen. Kodansha USA Publishing also handles the English publication of this series.

More recently, Emoto concluded her manga adaptation of NisiOisin's "Shin Honkaku Mahō Shōjo Risuka" (The New Orthodox Magical Girl Risuka) novels. This series, launched in Kodansha's Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine in April 2021, wrapped up in December 2024, with its seventh and final compiled book volume released in April 2024.
