Get ready for a dangerously funny new anime! TOHO animation has officially announced that the highly anticipated television anime adaptation of Toshiya Wakabayashi's popular manga, Happy Kanako's Killer Life (Shiawase Kanako no Koroshiya Seikatsu), is set to premiere next April. This exciting news brings a beloved web manga to life, promising a unique blend of dark comedy and slice-of-life charm.
The announcement, previously teased with enigmatic "Otter Agent" clues, has delighted fans eagerly awaiting Kanako Nishino's foray into the world of professional assassinations. Anime enthusiasts can mark their calendars for a spring full of unexpected thrills and plenty of laughs.
Gintama Director Shinji Takamatsu at the Helm
Leading the creative team for Happy Kanako's Killer Life is veteran director Shinji Takamatsu, celebrated for his work on hit series like Gintama. Takamatsu will not only direct the anime at Studio Drive but also oversee the series scripts, ensuring a consistent and engaging narrative that captures the manga's unique tone.
Joining him is Yoshiyuki Ōkubo, known for his work on Teppen—!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Laughing 'til you Cry, who will be responsible for character designs and will serve as chief animation director. This combination of talent suggests a visually dynamic and humor-rich adaptation.
Key voice cast members have also been revealed: Hana Tamegai steps into the role of the titular protagonist, Kanako Nishino. Ryōta Suzuki will voice Sakurai, Kanako's prickly yet intriguing coworker, and Junichi Suwabe rounds out the main cast as the President of the contract killer agency.
What's Happy Kanako's Killer Life About?
Happy Kanako's Killer Life introduces us to Nishino Kanako, a woman utterly fed up with her mundane job. When an unexpected opportunity arises, she jumps at the chance for a new gig, only to discover it's at an agency for contract killers. To her surprise, Kanako turns out to be exceptionally skilled at eliminating targets.
However, Kanako is far from a confident assassin. The series hilariously chronicles her struggles and adjustments to her unconventional new career. A significant part of her journey involves navigating her relationship with Sakurai, her attractive but often critical coworker, as she strives to earn his respect and find her footing in this dangerous new world. Seven Seas Entertainment, the publisher of the English manga, perfectly encapsulates the series as a "dangerously funny, full-color manga."
From Web Manga to Anime Sensation
Before its upcoming anime debut, Happy Kanako's Killer Life began its journey as a four-panel web manga. Creator Toshiya Wakabayashi launched the series on Twitter and his pixivFANBOX account, quickly gaining a following for its witty humor and charming art style. Seikaisha later serialized the manga on its Twi4 service, further expanding its reach. The manga has been a consistent success, with its ninth compiled book volume published recently.
English-speaking audiences can enjoy the series thanks to Seven Seas Entertainment, which has been steadily releasing the manga digitally and in print. The eighth English volume was released this past July, allowing new fans to catch up before the anime's arrival.
The series has also inspired a live-action adaptation, with a live-action series premiering on DMM TV in February 2025. A second season followed on the same service on September 17.
Toshiya Wakabayashi's Other Notable Works
Fans of Toshiya Wakabayashi's previous work might already be familiar with his engaging storytelling. He is also the creator of the popular Tsuredure Children manga, which chronicles a series of short school romance stories in an omnibus format. Tsuredure Children, which began online in 2012 and later serialized in Weekly Shōnen Magazine, also received a television anime adaptation in July 2017. Kodansha USA Publishing released the manga digitally in English, and the anime was streamed by Crunchyroll and Funimation.
The upcoming Happy Kanako's Killer Life anime promises to be another comedic hit from a talented creator, brought to life by a seasoned team. Get ready to embrace the absurdity and humor of Kanako's new life as a contract killer next April!
