North American audiences can catch special screenings in select theaters on December 30, followed by a wider release nationwide on January 15. This cinematic event promises to bring Fujimoto's unique narrative to life, offering a fresh perspective on a beloved tale. GKIDS also premiered a trailer, building anticipation for this significant release.

From Japanese Box Office Success to Global Acclaim

The "Look Back" live-action film debuted strongly in Japan on September 11, securing the #5 spot and earning over US$929,800 in its initial three days. Its journey extended globally, gracing prestigious international film festivals. It was prominently featured at the 79th Cannes International Film Festival on May 15 and later at the London Film Festival in October. The film's critical reception led to it winning the UNIMED (Mediterranean Universities Union) student jury's UNIMED award in September, underscoring its widespread appeal. GKIDS will ensure broad distribution, releasing the film in theaters across the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and Ireland.

A Poignant Narrative of Artistic Friendship

The Cannes International Film Festival’s description beautifully captures the film’s essence: a tender coming-of-age story spanning over a decade, exploring the bond between two girls united by their dream of becoming manga artists. Fujino, a talented artist, meets Kyomoto, a shy admirer. Their shared passion for art forms a perfect partnership, but as their work gains recognition, they confront decisions that challenge their artistic collaboration. Directed by the esteemed Hirokazu Kore-eda, this film serves as a heartfelt tribute to friendship and the creative journey, offering insightful glimpses into the craft of manga artistry.

Visionary Team Behind the Cinematic Adaptation

The live-action "Look Back" film features a talented cast and crew. Aju Makita portrays Kyomoto, while Natsuki Deguchi takes on the role of Fujino. Director Hirokazu Kore-eda, known for "Shoplifters," also wrote the screenplay and edited the film. The musical score was crafted by Yuta Bando, with Senzo Ueno handling photography and Shinsuke Kojima overseeing art direction.

Special guest contributions elevate the film further. Musician Kenshi Yonezu performs guitar, credited as "Shark Kick Guitar." Actress and singer Toko Miura lends her vocals to an insert song. Animator and director Yoko Kuno directed a unique rotoscoped animation sequence based on their performance, produced by Shinei Animation, adding a distinctive visual layer to the film.

The Manga's Enduring Legacy and Other Fujimoto Works

Tatsuki Fujimoto's "Look Back" one-shot manga originally launched on Shueisha's Shonen Jump+ in July 2021, instantly becoming a sensation with over 2.5 million views on its first day. Viz Media and MANGA Plus made the manga accessible digitally in English, and Viz Media later released it in print in September 2022.

It's important to note the distinction between this live-action film and the anime film adaptation of "Look Back," which also saw a successful theatrical run. The anime film opened in Japan in June 2024 and was screened by GKIDS in North America in October 2024. Both adaptations offer unique cinematic experiences of Fujimoto's original story.

Fujimoto's other major work, "Chainsaw Man," began its "Gakko-hen" (School Arc) in July 2022 on Shueisha's Shonen Jump+ after concluding its first part in December 2020. His impactful contributions continue to shape the manga landscape. Don't miss the opportunity to see this powerful live-action film in theaters soon!
