Behind the Scenes: Returning Talent
The celebratory film brings back a familiar and beloved creative team, ensuring a faithful and high-quality continuation of the Aikatsu Stars! legacy. Teruo Sato, who directed the original Aikatsu Stars! anime series, returns to helm the new film at Bandai Namco Pictures.
Yūko Kakihara, the original series' head writer, is also back to craft the film's compelling scenario. Additionally, Yukiko Aikei, the character designer for the original series, reprises her role, guaranteeing the characters retain their iconic and cherished appearances. Bandai Namco Pictures is handling the distribution of this much-anticipated film.
A Legacy of Stardom: The Aikatsu! Franchise
The Aikatsu Stars! television anime series originally debuted on TV Tokyo in April 2016 and concluded in March 2018 after 100 episodes. The first Aikatsu Stars! anime film premiered in August 2016, setting a precedent for cinematic adventures.
The broader Aikatsu! franchise has evolved significantly over the years, spawning several successful installments. Following Aikatsu Stars!, the franchise continued with Aikatsu Friends! (April 2018 - September 2019), Aikatsu on Parade! (October 2019 - July 2020), and the innovative hybrid anime/live-action series Aikatsu! Planet (January - June 2021). The franchise even ventured into a YouTube-exclusive VTuber project with Aikatsu! Academy! in July 2024. Aikatsu! Planet also received its own anime film in July 2022.
The entire Aikatsu! phenomenon began with its original arcade card game in October 2012. This game inspired a television anime that ran from 2012 to 2016 and three anime films. Each successive anime installment in the franchise had its own associated arcade card game, with the exception of Aikatsu! Academy! as a YouTube-exclusive project.
Celebrating a Decade of Idols
It is important to note that Aikatsu Stars! Hoshiboshi no Progress is the Aikatsu Stars! specific 10th-anniversary film. The overall Aikatsu! franchise also celebrated its 10th anniversary with the Aikatsu! 10th Story ~Mirai e no Starway~ (Starway to the Future) anime film, which opened in Japan in January 2023. This film revisited the original Aikatsu! series, reuniting director Ryuichi Kimura, scenario writer Yoichi Kato, and character designer Hiroko Yaguchi. It focused on protagonist Ichigo Hoshinomiya, setting the story within the 2012 to 2016 Aikatsu! anime timeline.
Fans can look forward to another dazzling display of idol dreams, music, and friendship with Aikatsu Stars! Hoshiboshi no Progress. Get ready for an inspiring journey as Yume and her friends embark on their biggest performance yet at the Venus Jamboree!
