Initially, it is easy to root for Ellie. Antagonists, almost exclusively men, constantly underestimate her, often insulting her with lines like "At the end of the day, you are a woman." They swiftly receive their well-deserved comeuppance, in satisfying moments reminiscent of online revenge tales. A Livid Lady's Guide scratches that itch for justice against perceived morons.
However, as the story progresses, Ellie's actions become increasingly morally complex. She maintains a body count that includes over a hundred children. She owns a slave, refusing to free him under the belief it would be disrespectful. Yet, she also adopts an orphan, Alice, showering her with affection and loyalty. This stark contrast highlights her deeply fractured morality: fiercely protective of her chosen family, utterly callous towards others.
The Illusion of Reckoning: A Missed Opportunity
A pivotal moment occurs in Book 4 when Ellie's rival, Roselia, directly confronts her hypocrisy. Her adventures are consistently exciting, and Rymane Tsouria's translation of Hagure Metabo's prose is compelling, yet a lingering unease persists regarding Ellie's next atrocity.
The Weight of Power and a Superficial Feminism
The central premise of revenge is challenged because Ellie, with her godlike abilities, is rarely in true danger. This raises questions about the narrative's authenticity as a revenge story when the protagonist is never truly vulnerable. The story's attempt at female empowerment feels superficial, ultimately concluding with an elementary "girls rule, boys drool" rather than exploring deeper ethical considerations of using the oppressor's tools.
Glimpses into the Yutear Empire's future, where Ellie, now known as the Silver Witch, has faded into legend, further complicate her legacy.
