A Journey Through the Abyss: Franchise History
This new film builds upon a rich and expanding narrative. Kadokawa first announced a sequel to Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun in January 2023, setting the stage for this new trilogy. The original 13-episode television anime series first premiered in Japan in July 2017, quickly garnering a dedicated fanbase. Sentai Filmworks licensed the series for North American release, while Amazon's Anime Strike and HIDIVE streamed it internationally.
The second television season, Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun, based on Akihito Tsukushi's manga, premiered in July 2022 and concluded with a one-hour finale in September 2022, with HIDIVE streaming it concurrently with its Japanese broadcast. Sentai Filmworks also licensed this season for digital and home video release.
The franchise has also seen successful film adaptations. The anime film Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul opened in Japan in January 2020, achieving significant box office success and later receiving 4DX and MX4D screenings. Sentai Filmworks brought the film to select theaters in the U.S. and Canada, despite initial delays due to global events.
Prior to Dawn of the Deep Soul, two compilation films recapitalized the first season. The Allure of the Abyss
The central premise of Made in Abyss revolves around an enigmatic, colossal pit and cave system known only as the "Abyss." This is the last truly unexplored territory on Earth, teeming with bizarre and marvelous creatures, and harboring invaluable relics that surpass current human understanding. The Abyss's profound mysteries beckon adventurers, known as "Cave Raiders," to descend into its depths. The story follows Riko, a young orphan girl residing in the town of Ōrth on the Abyss's rim. Her aspiration is to emulate her mother, a legendary Cave Raider, and unravel the secrets of the vast system. Her life takes an extraordinary turn when, during an exploration, she discovers Reg, a robot with a striking resemblance to a human boy.
The new film trilogy promises to delve even deeper into this mesmerizing, dangerous world, building on the established narrative and expanding the lore of the Abyss. Fans eagerly await the next chapter of Riko and Reg's unforgettable adventure.
