Toei Animation Reveals Monkey Quest Hybrid Film
Toei Animation is taking audiences on an intergalactic adventure with their newly unveiled 2D-3D hybrid animated film, Monkey Quest. The project made waves at the Annecy Festival in France, showcasing a unique blend of animation styles with Studio SANZIGEN handling the intricate 3D elements. This ambitious film promises a visually stunning experience, merging traditional and modern animation.
Evolution from Hypergalactic
Fans might recall this project under a different name: Hypergalactic. Toei Animation initially announced Hypergalactic in February 2024 as a full CG film. However, the vision has evolved into the captivating 2D-3D hybrid format now known as Monkey Quest. This shift highlights Toei Animation's commitment to pushing creative boundaries, adapting to best serve the film's artistic goals.
An Epic Intergalactic Journey
Monkey Quest draws loose inspiration from the beloved Chinese literary classic, Journey to the West, re-imagining its themes for a modern audience. The story introduces 12-year-old Ellie and her 1-year-old brother Adam in a not-so-distant future. Their adventure kicks off when they liberate Okon, Earth's long-forgotten protector. This daring act plunges them into an intergalactic conflict against the formidable villain Vex, promising thrilling action. The narrative combines classic mythological elements with futuristic concepts.
Star-Studded Voice Cast and International Creators
The film boasts an impressive voice cast, bringing its vibrant characters to life. Adam Devine lends his voice to the protector Okon, while Elsie Fisher portrays the courageous Ellie. Veteran actor J.K. Simmons takes on the role of the antagonist, Vex.
Behind the scenes, Monkey Quest is a true international collaboration between Japan and the U.S., featuring a diverse crew of animators and filmmakers. Sonic the Hedgehog designer Naoto Oshima co-created the concept and characters alongside Joseph Chou, known for his work on The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. The script is penned by David N. Weiss, acclaimed for Shrek 2, who also co-directs the film with Stephanie Ma Stine (Kung-Fu Panda 4) and character designer Takao Noguchi. Toei Animation's own Yoshi Ikezawa is producing this monumental project. Further enhancing the film's action sequences, Sunghoo Park, director of Jujutsu Kaisen and The God of High School, provided invaluable assistance and storyboards.
Targeting a 2027 Release and Expanding Universe
Monkey Quest is currently in post-production, working towards an anticipated 2027 release. Charades will handle worldwide distribution, ensuring this exciting new film reaches audiences globally. But the adventure doesn't stop on the big screen. Toei Animation is also expanding the Monkey Quest universe into interactive gaming. They partnered with Spaceport Technologies and Twin Atlas for a Roblox game titled Hypergalactic: Monkey Quest, launched in November 2024. This game serves as a central hub for a connected universe of games, inviting players to dive deeper into the world. Additionally, Toei Animation previously announced a partnership with Spaceport Technologies for content within Fortnite, further integrating the franchise into popular gaming platforms.
