Discover Your JoJo Stand in Shibuya
For countless anime enthusiasts, Hirohiko Araki's JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series is a cornerstone of imaginative storytelling, known for its electrifying action, memorable characters, and wild humor. Central to its enduring appeal are the unique Stands, powerful manifestations of one's spirit, often named after iconic music acts. While fans have long dreamed of possessing their own Stand, a real-world experience in Shibuya, Japan, now offers the chance to get an officially sanctioned Stand based on your actual abilities. This immersive adventure awaits at THE JOJO WORLD store, a must-visit destination for any devoted fan.
Located on the sixth floor of Shibuya's bustling PARCO department store, nestled among other major fandom shops like Nintendo and CAPCOM, THE JOJO WORLD store is a treasure trove. It's packed with merchandise spanning the entire saga, from Phantom Blood to The JOJOLands. Beyond shopping, visitors can enjoy the charming Iggy Cafe, try their hand at various mini-games, and even consult an Iggy shrine fortune dispenser. However, the crown jewel for many is the immersive Stand Abilities Lab, designed to test your mettle and match you with a fitting Stand ally.
Test Your Abilities at THE JOJO WORLD Lab
Upon paying the 990 yen entry fee, I stepped into one of the Stand Abilities Lab's designated booths. The setup was minimalist yet intriguing: a screen, a wall of buttons, a small handheld switch, and a floor pressure plate. With these tools, I embarked on a rigorous series of six tests, each inspired by iconic moments from the JoJo's universe. I approached the challenge with confidence, ready to give it my all, reasoning that if I lacked in one area, I could compensate in another like dexterity or logic.
The six core abilities evaluated are "destructive power," "speed," "precision," "range," "growth potential," and "stamina." Each is assessed through its own action-based mini-game. These ranged from hitting rapidly lit-up buttons and running in place to navigating intricate mazes and spotting subtle differences in images. I expected to excel at the image-differences test, but surprisingly found it the most difficult due to an unforgiving time limit and incredibly subtle discrepancies. Even hitting the lit-up buttons, which felt like a strong performance, only earned me a C ranking in "destructive power," signaling early on that this lab takes its evaluations seriously.
My Stand: Boy II Man and Bizarre Coincidences
Despite some C rankings, my perseverance paid off with A grades in endurance and range, complemented by a B in speed. These strengths across the board determined my Stand. The result? Boy II Man. It was a fascinating outcome, suggesting a Stand that operates beyond conventional combat. Boy II Man, from Diamond is Unbreakable, doesn't engage in direct physical confrontation but instead steals energy from opposing Stands through a game of Rock-Paper-Scissors. If its user wins enough rounds, the opponent's Stand can be entirely absorbed.
What made this result particularly striking was a personal anecdote. Just recently at Anime Expo 2024, I found myself in a massive Rock-Paper-Scissors game for a prize giveaway, successfully winning nine consecutive rounds to claim a piece of character artwork. The uncanny connection between my personal experience and the ability of my assigned Stand, Boy II Man, left me pondering the bizarre coincidences that often echo the JoJo's universe. It was truly a moment where life imitated art, or perhaps, Stand lore.
Indulge at the Iggy Cafe
After such an intriguing and demanding test of abilities, a culinary break was in order. The Iggy Cafe, nestled within THE JOJO WORLD store, boasted some of the most charming theming and branding I've ever encountered. Its marquee features a delightful illustration of the beloved Boston Terrier character in a chef's hat, surrounded by coffee beans. My husband was so taken by the logo that he purchased a blue apron emblazoned with it.
The menu offered a diverse array of sweet and savory snacks, as well as several satisfying lunch-worthy options, ensuring you can truly get your fill. We sampled the Mochimochimocchi (S・P), the adorable Iggy donuts, a savory pork katsu sandwich, and THE JOJO WORLD original drink, each item a treat for both the eyes and the palate.
Iconic Treats and Themed Delights
First up, the Mochimochimocchi. These chewy mochi balls, resembling the bullets from the Stand known as Sex Pistols, came in two delightful flavors: milk cream and caramel. Both were exceptionally tasty, offering a satisfyingly squishy texture that was a joy to eat.
The Iggy donuts were standard cake donuts, but their appeal lay in the exquisite icing work. The character faces were incredibly cute, almost making it hard to take a bite out of Iggy's silly expression. The quality of the icing was particularly impressive; achieving such detailed designs often requires fondant in American bakeries, a texture I'm not fond of, making these even more special.
However, the undisputed star of the menu was the pork katsu sandwich. While its theme wasn't as overtly character-specific as the desserts, its quality was undeniable. The panko crust was perfectly crispy, the meat was wonderfully juicy, and the flavorful sauce added a pleasant acidity. Encased in fluffy bread, it was a perfectly executed sandwich that truly hit the spot. It even came in a charming takeaway bag, reminiscent of the St. Gentleman sandwich shop from Diamond is Unbreakable, adding another layer of thematic fun.
To wash everything down, THE JOJO WORLD original drink was a vibrant pink and blue concoction made with pineapple juice, pink lemonade, and blue jelly. This drink was surprisingly delicious, even for someone who typically avoids boba-like textures. The pineapple juice infused it with a unique flavor, transforming it into something far more sophisticated than just a brightly colored lemonade – truly an alcohol-free cocktail experience.
THE JOJO WORLD store offers an unparalleled experience for fans, whether you're eager to discover your own unique Stand power or simply want to collect exclusive merchandise from your favorite series. If a trip to Shibuya isn't in your immediate future, here's hoping JoJo-themed events bring this bizarre adventure closer to home soon!
