Petals of Reincarnation: Behind the Anime Talents
Petals of Reincarnation, the new anime adapting Mikihisa Konishi's manga, plunges viewers into a world where high schoolers like Toya Senji and Haito Luo Buffett discover the power to wield historical figures' talents. We spoke with series producer Takanori Matsuoka and Haito's voice actress, Wakana Maruoka, to explore the series' captivating concept and production insights.
From Manga Fan to Anime Production
Takanori Matsuoka's connection to Petals of Reincarnation began as a fan, discovering the manga in a bookstore. Anime adaptation discussions started five to six years ago, with Matsuoka meeting Konishi-sensei after the project was officially greenlit. Wakana Maruoka secured her role as Haito through a standard two-round audition process, first submitting a recording, then performing in a studio.
Unique Darkness and Evolving Motivation
The series is known for its intense tonal darkness. Wakana Maruoka highlights Toya's character development, especially in the anime's dark opening scenes, as a key focus for viewers. Takanori Matsuoka explains Toya's initial drive: feeling insignificant compared to his older brother, prompting a risky gamble to acquire talent. This motivation deepens as he encounters others wielding powers from the Branch of Reincarnation.
Matsuoka emphasizes the series' unique premise: it is not about reincarnation, but about characters wielding historical figures' "talents" as supernatural abilities. This innovative approach was a primary draw for him.
Character Connections and Creative Joy
Wakana Maruoka strongly relates to Haito, citing their shared "go with the flow" approach and kendo background. Takanori Matsuoka finds kinship with energetic, decisive characters like Xiang Yu and Kitazuka.
For Maruoka, a favorite part of the project was portraying Haito as a "breath of fresh air" amidst the darkness, encouraged by the director to be bubbly and energetic. Matsuoka appreciated mangaka Konishi-sensei's deep collaboration, who, after initially entrusting the anime team fully, provided a detailed reference booklet with valuable suggestions that shaped the script through extensive team discussions.
Crafting the Edgy Soundscape
As music producer, Takanori Matsuoka partnered with KOHTA YAMAMOTO, a trusted collaborator, for the score. Given the story's edgy setting, the music features many dark, cool tracks fitting the fight scenes. However, the soundtrack offers variety, incorporating lighthearted, humorous pieces, and Japanese-inspired music blended with rock and other genres, creating a rich and diverse auditory experience.
A Philosophical Look at Talent
Both interviewees shared messages for fans. Wakana Maruoka encourages diverse enjoyment, from battle scenes to philosophical themes about desired talents and the overall dark atmosphere. She notes the anime's capacity to move emotions and provoke thought.
Takanori Matsuoka invites fans to consider the deeper implications of talent: often emerging from a dark past or suffering. He prompts viewers to think about why characters seek talent, exemplified by Toya's feeling of being untalented despite his intelligence. Matsuoka suggests the series will help viewers investigate the fundamental question of "what talent actually is."
Petals of Reincarnation is now streaming on HIDIVE, offering a captivating exploration of power, identity, and the profound nature of talent.
