The Epic Saga of Kingdom
For those unfamiliar with the sprawling narrative, Yasuhisa Hara's historical manga intricately weaves the tale of Xin, a slave boy driven by the extraordinary dream of becoming a revered general for the state of Qin. His journey intertwines with Ying Zheng, the young Qin king who harbors the ambitious goal of unifying China. Together, they navigate a treacherous landscape of power struggles and warfare, as Xin strives to forge an army capable of conquering the Seven Warring States. This fifth film promises to delve deeper into their grand quest, bringing more of the manga's intense conflicts to the big screen.
A Legacy of Success
The Kingdom live-action film series has consistently captivated audiences and critics alike, establishing a formidable presence in the Japanese cinematic landscape. The first film, released in April 2019, garnered an impressive 5.73 billion yen, setting a high bar for its successors. Kingdom II: Harukanaru Daichi e followed in July 2022, earning 5.16 billion yen and securing its place as Japan's highest-earning live-action film of that year. The third installment, launched in July 2023, continued this trend, achieving the best opening weekend among all three films. The fourth film premiered on July 12, 2024, and Netflix is scheduled to stream it in January 2025, broadening its global reach. The upcoming fifth film, Kingdom: Tamashii no Kessen, is slated to open in Japan on July 17.
Beyond the Silver Screen
The Kingdom phenomenon extends far beyond live-action films. Yasuhisa Hara's record-setting manga, which began its serialization in Shueisha's Weekly Young Jump magazine in 2006, will soon be available to English readers, with Viz Media releasing it starting in November.
The franchise also boasts a successful anime adaptation, with the first series premiering in 2012. Funimation previously streamed and released the first two seasons in North America. The third anime series, which initially premiered in April 2020, resumed airing in April 2021 after a hiatus and was streamed by Funimation. The fourth season aired on NHK General in April 2022, streamed by Crunchyroll, followed by a fifth season in January 2024. The sixth season premiered in October, concluding with the promise of a sequel, ensuring the animated story continues.
Furthermore, the epic tale is inspiring a second stage play adaptation, scheduled to run in Tokyo, Osaka, and Fukuoka starting in August. This widespread success across multiple mediums underscores the enduring appeal and cultural impact of the Kingdom saga, cementing its status as a monumental historical epic.
