GKIDS Secures Distribution for Live-Action Look Back Film
GKIDS has announced its acquisition of distribution rights for the upcoming live-action film adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto's acclaimed one-shot manga, "Look Back." The distribution deal covers key territories including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Ireland. Plans are in place for a theatrical release of the film across these regions. This highly anticipated project is currently progressing through its post-production phase. The film is scheduled to premiere in Japanese theaters during the year 2026.
Visionary Talent Directs Look Back Adaptation
The live-action "Look Back" film is being brought to life under the direction of Hirokazu Kore-eda, a renowned filmmaker known for works such as "Shoplifters," "Our Little Sister," and "Air Doll." Kore-eda is not only directing the film but is also taking on the roles of editor and screenwriter for the adaptation. The musical score for the film is being composed by Yūta Bandō, also recognized by the name Taku Matsushiba, who has contributed to projects like "BELLE" and "Kaiju No. 8."
Comprehensive Production Team Assembled
A dedicated team of professionals is working on the live-action "Look Back" film. Senzo Ueno is leading the photography, ensuring the visual quality of the production. Masachio Nishida is responsible for the lighting, setting the atmosphere and mood for the scenes. Kazuhiko Tomita is managing the sound, guaranteeing an immersive audio experience. The art direction is overseen by Shinsuke Kojima, shaping the visual aesthetic of the film's settings. Sachiko Ito is in charge of costume design, crafting the attire for the characters. The Original Manga's Impact and Story
Tatsuki Fujimoto's "Look Back" began as a one-shot manga, making its debut on Shueisha's Shonen Jump+ platform in July 2021. The manga quickly garnered significant attention, achieving over 2.5 million views on its initial day of release. For English-speaking audiences, Viz Media and MANGA Plus provided digital access to the manga. Viz Media later published a print edition of "Look Back" in September 2022. The narrative centers on Fujino, an overly confident individual, and Kyomoto, a reclusive shut-in. Despite their contrasting personalities, a shared passion for drawing manga unites these two girls from a small town. The story explores themes of growth and moving forward, presented with the unique touch characteristic of Tatsuki Fujimoto, the creator behind "Chainsaw Man."
Anime Adaptation's Earlier Release and Performance
Prior to the live-action announcement, an anime film adaptation of Fujimoto's "Look Back" one-shot manga premiered in theaters across Japan in June 2024. During its opening weekend, the anime film achieved the second position in terms of ticket sales, while securing the top spot in weekend earnings. Over its first three days, the film successfully sold 135,000 tickets, accumulating earnings of 227 million, which approximates to US$1.40 million. GKIDS later presented the anime film to North American audiences in October 2024. The film's opening weekend at the U.S. box office generated US$688,253.
Tatsuki Fujimoto's Celebrated Manga Legacy
Tatsuki Fujimoto is also widely recognized for his manga series "Fire Punch." His highly popular "Chainsaw Man" manga first launched in Weekly Shonen Jump in December 2018. The manga's first part, known as the "Kōan" (Public Safety) arc, concluded its run in December 2020. The second part of the manga, titled "Gakkō-hen" (School Arc), commenced serialization on Shueisha's Shonen Jump+ service in July 2022. This "Gakkō-hen" arc is scheduled to conclude on March 24, with its final installment appearing on March 25 in Japan.
Extensive Chainsaw Man Anime Projects
The "Chainsaw Man" manga has inspired a comprehensive anime adaptation. The anime series premiered in October 2022, broadcasting on TV Tokyo and five other affiliated channels, in addition to being available on Amazon Prime Video. Crunchyroll offers streaming of the anime to audiences in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide. The anime narrative has also expanded into a film, "Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc," which opened in Japan on September 19. Sony Pictures Entertainment acquired the worldwide theatrical rights for this film. Sony Pictures Entertainment subsequently released the film in theaters in the U.S. and Canada on October 24. Furthermore, the "Shikaku Arc" (Assassins Arc) of the "Chainsaw Man" manga is currently slated for its own anime adaptation.
