Tokyo Big Sight recently hosted the AnimeJapan 2026 convention, a vibrant hub for all things anime. Among the most anticipated events was the Emerging Creator Awards 2026 ceremony, held on Saturday. This prestigious event, a partnership between AnimeJapan, the Japan Creator Support Fund, and Crunchyroll, celebrates the future stars of the animation industry by recognizing outstanding student work.

Grand Prix and Crunchyroll Award Winners Crowned

The top honor, the Grand Prix award, was awarded to Yui Hara from Kyoto Seika University for her compelling short film, "Police Men." This impressive achievement comes with a significant prize of 1 million yen, approximately US$6,000, underscoring the industry's investment in new talent. Hara's victory highlights the innovative spirit fostered within university animation programs.

Another significant accolade, the Crunchyroll Award, went to Raiki Murao of HAL Nagoya for "One with the City" ("Kono Machi to, Tomo ni"). Murao's impactful work also secured a substantial scholarship of 1 million yen, demonstrating Crunchyroll's commitment to nurturing global animation creators and bringing diverse stories to audiences worldwide.

Technical Excellence Recognized Across Categories

The awards also celebrated technical mastery and artistic vision across several specialized categories, each carrying a 300,000-yen (about US$2,000) prize. Kyoto Seika University demonstrated its strong presence in the technical fields:

  • Best Technical Award: Leow Yi Jing from Kyoto Seika University won for the visually innovative work "Offbeat." This award highlights the crucial role of technical skill in bringing animated worlds to life.
  • Best Director Award: Wang Xinyue, another talented student from Kyoto Seika University, earned this recognition for "Eiya no Requiem." This award acknowledges exceptional leadership and storytelling vision behind the camera.

Other institutions also showcased top-tier talent:

  • Best Character Award: Kakeru Hane of HAL Tokyo received this for "Magakoro Musubi: Gyutto Komeru Omi," celebrating memorable and well-designed animated personalities.
  • Best Design Award: Katsuki Yokoyama from HAL Osaka took home the award for "Natsu no Omokage" ("Traces of Summer"), recognizing outstanding visual aesthetic and overall artistic direction.

Special Awards and Global Reach

Beyond the main and technical categories, four works were honored with the coveted AnimeJapan Special Awards. This elite group included both Grand Prix winner "Police Men" and Crunchyroll Award winner "One with the City," recognizing their exceptional impact. "Traces of Summer," Katsuki Yokoyama's Best Design Award-winning piece, also received a Special Award, further cementing its artistic merit. Rounding out the special recognition was "Live in Red" by Madoka Hadano of Tokyo Polytechnic University, a testament to its unique vision.

Anime fans globally will have the opportunity to experience these award-winning animations. The shorts will be available in 200 countries through Crunchyroll, ensuring a wide international audience.
