Wash It All Away ‒ Episode 6

Episode 6 of "Wash It All Away": A Relaxing Respite
The latest installment of "Wash It All Away" continues its gentle exploration of everyday life, with episode six offering a particularly soothing experience. While not without its familiar tropes, the episode manages to highlight the series' strengths, particularly its atmospheric qualities and the subtle charm of its characters.
Music and Atmosphere
One of the standout aspects of this episode is its effective use of music. The score's twinkly sounds beautifully complement two key scenes: Kinme's underwater swim at the beach and the final fireworks display. Although the underwater scene borders on fan service, the tasteful use of arpeggios elevates it. Similarly, the fireworks scene, reminiscent of a previous episode, gains a renewed sense of tenderness through a soft F major riff. The simplicity of the music enhances the emotional impact, making these scenes more memorable and forgiving any minor shortcomings.
A New Task
With the festival behind her, Kinme takes on a new cleaning job at an old inn. Her task involves tidying up the inn itself and restoring an antique doll. While the doll cleaning montage might feel redundant, showcasing a process similar to her laundry work, it fits within the slice-of-life nature of the show. The episode maintains a predictable and comfortable rhythm, offering no real surprises, save for the brief mention of Kinme's amnesia during the doll cleaning, which is handled with more subtlety than before.
Character Quirks and Familiar Tropes
The episode seems to lean into Kinme's "ditzy moeblob" persona, featuring flashbacks to her fall from the festival float. These reminders, so soon after the event, feel somewhat distracting. Kinme's newfound awkwardness is also highlighted, with moments in front of Kyuushou and later conversations with Asami about it. While relatable, this portrayal of awkwardness feels like another cliché being checked off the list. Despite these character quirks, "Wash It All Away" doesn't seem to prioritize strong character development. Instead, it excels in creating a pleasant atmosphere.
Expanding the Ensemble
While Kinme remains central, the episode dedicates more time to other characters. Kyuushou is seen greeting customers at his family's inn, and Kuriru takes on a part-time job at a cafe. This broadening of focus helps to make the episode feel more lively, preventing Kinme from being the sole point of attention.
Fireworks and Warmth
The episode culminates in a fireworks show, accompanied by a montage of characters basking in the warm glow of the night sky. This scene provides a sense of community and connection, further solidifying the show's comforting atmosphere. The episode's relaxed pace and emphasis on atmosphere and vibes make it a standout offering in the series.
