Tamon's B-Side ‒ Episode 6

A Shocking Turn in Tamon's B-Side: Episode 6 Review

Tonal Whammy: From Lighthearted to Dark

Tamon's B-Side, a series built on the contrast between a charming idol and his insecure inner self, took a surprisingly dark turn in its sixth episode. Up until now, the show has maintained a light and comedic tone, but this episode dives into darker territory, exploring themes of suicide and manipulative behavior. The shift is jarring, almost like the show itself is revealing its own B-side, a hidden layer of complexity beneath the surface.

The Unbelievable Suicide Attempt

The episode opens with Tamon attempting suicide, a moment that feels completely out of left field. The execution of this scene is odd, making it difficult to fully grasp the gravity of the situation. Utage's rapid arrival on the roof, coupled with comedic elements like Tamon's hamster comparison and exaggerated facial expressions, undermines the seriousness of the moment. It creates a tonal dissonance that leaves a bitter taste. The show, previously known for its silliness, struggles to handle such a sensitive subject with the necessary weight and care.

Manipulation Takes Center Stage

However, the episode redeems itself later by addressing Tamon's manipulative behavior toward Utage. This is where the series finally confronts the power imbalance inherent in their relationship as idol and fan. Tamon's actions reveal a more sinister side, forcing Utage to confront the unhealthy dynamic between them. The show deserves credit for tackling this issue, which is often overlooked in media despite its potential for causing real harm and trauma.

Power Dynamics: Idol and Fan, Client and Worker

The power imbalance between Tamon and Utage is multifaceted. Not only are they idol and fan, but they are also in a client-worker relationship. Tamon's influence over Utage's job adds another layer of complexity, highlighting the potential for exploitation. While Utage's financial independence mitigates some of the risk, the episode raises questions about how Tamon might use his position to manipulate her if she were more vulnerable. This exploration of power dynamics is a welcome addition to the series, adding depth and nuance to their relationship.

Utage: A Voice of Reason

Utage's ability to maintain a clear head amidst this turmoil is remarkable. She recognizes Tamon's manipulative tendencies and confronts him directly. Her strength and awareness are commendable, making her a compelling character to watch. One can only wonder if the creator will use her character to deconstruct the power dynamic entirely.

Tamon's Descent: Hurt and Possessiveness

Tamon's behavior stems from his deep insecurity and hurt over losing his position as center. This doesn't excuse his actions, but it provides context for his possessive feelings toward Utage. The series thankfully does not shy away from addressing this. The episode leaves us questioning whether Tamon is beyond help and if he would even accept it.

Keito's True Nature Revealed

Amidst the Tamon-Utage drama, we finally see a glimpse of the real Keito. Contrary to his laid-back persona, he is strict, stern, and perhaps a control freak. It is hard to tell if this is just how his personality is or it is because of concern about the girl that Ouri and Tamon are hanging around. Given his reaction to learning about Utage being a Tamon fangirl, it leans to the latter. After all, one can't entirely blame him for being concerned given how toxic idol culture is, especially when it comes to those idols having a personal love life.

A Darker Direction

Episode 6 of Tamon's B-Side marks a significant shift in tone, delving into complex and uncomfortable themes. While the suicide attempt felt mishandled, the exploration of power dynamics and manipulation adds depth to the series. The episode leaves us with lingering questions about Tamon's future and the nature of his relationship with Utage. It demonstrates that despite its initial lightheartedness, Tamon's B-Side is not afraid to venture into darker and more challenging territory.
