Hiro Yukis Sparks of Tomorrow novel is set to electrify screens this July as the television anime adaptation makes its worldwide debut on Netflix. The production team has revealed additional cast members, adding to the anticipation surrounding this historical and fantastical tale.
New Cast Members Revealed
The latest announcement introduces four talented voice actors to the ensemble cast, each bringing life to compelling characters within the story.
- Koki Uchiyama as Yosuke Mizoe: Uchiyama lends his voice to Yosuke Mizoe, the heir to the powerful Mizoe Company. The company built its wealth through steam engines, making Yosukes character a key figure in the transition to a new era of technology.
- Daisuke Ono as Seiroku Sakamoto: Ono voices Seiroku Sakamoto, the older brother of Kihachi and a passionate inventor dedicated to the wonders of electricity. His expertise and fervor for innovation are sure to play a pivotal role in the narrative.
- Shunsuke Takeuchi as Kengo Kuga: Takeuchi portrays Kengo Kuga, a strong and physically imposing former soldier. Kengo is also Norikos fiancé, adding another layer of complexity to the relationships within the story.
- Minako Kotobuki as Noriko Momokawa: Kotobuki voices Noriko Momokawa, Inakos reliable and skilled older sister. Noriko excels in martial arts and serves as a dependable figure in Inakos life.
Production Team and Initial Cast
The anime boasts a talented production team, with Minoru Ota at the helm as director. Tatsuhiko Urahata is overseeing the series scripts, ensuring a compelling adaptation of the novel. Kohei Okamura is the chief animation director and character designer. Takaaki Suzuki is responsible for the worldview setting. Hitomi Koto is composing the music.
Previously announced cast members include Yuma Uchida as Kihachi Sakamoto and Sora Amamiya as Inako Momokawa.
Story Synopsis
Sparks of Tomorrow is set in the summer of 1907, during the 40th year of the Meiji era. The story follows 15-year-old Inako Momokawa, the second daughter of a sake brewer in Kyoto. Inako struggles to find her place and often faces criticism from her father.
Her life takes an unexpected turn when she meets Kihachi Sakamoto, a young man who embraces the promise of electricity. Kihachi rejects traditional beliefs and proclaims the dawn of a new technological age.
When the topic of marriage arises, Inako finds herself pressured by her father's decisions. Feeling trapped, she confides in Kihachi about her desire to escape her predetermined fate. To prevent the unwanted marriage, Inako and Kihachi embark on a quest to find a mysterious book called the Electrical Catalog. This book, written by Kihachi in his youth, contains predictions about the future of electricity. However, the book is now missing, having been taken by Kihachis older brother, Seiroku. The search for the Electrical Catalog takes Inako and Kihachi on an adventure across Kyoto and Shiga prefectures.
A Kyoto Animation Project
Kyoto Animation first announced the anime adaptation of Sparks of Tomorrow in July 2018. The novel itself received recognition at the 8th Kyoto Animation Awards in May 2017, where it won an honorable mention in the full-length novel category. Kyoto Animations KA Esuma Bunko label published the novel in August 2018, featuring illustrations by Kazumi Ikeda and art and background by Momoka Nagatani.
