Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin Anime Special Announces New Character and Air Dates

The anime adaptation of the popular action role-playing game, Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin, is set to return with a two-part television special. Titled "Tensui no Sakuna Hime: Kokorowa Inasaku Nisshi" (Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin - Kokorowa's Rice Farming Journal), the special will focus on the character Kokorowa and her adventures in rice farming alongside Sakuna. The official website has released a promotional video, revealing new details about the project.

New Character Introduction

The special will introduce a new character named Uketa Hime, who will be voiced by Asami Imai. Uketa Hime is described as Kokorowa Hime's rival. Her role in the story and the nature of her rivalry with Kokorowa remain to be seen.

Staff and Production Details

Masayuki Yoshihara returns to direct the special at P.A. Works. Keigo Koyanagi is writing the scripts, Ayako Kurome is serving as color key artist, and Mayumi Miyaoka is in charge of art setting.

Story Synopsis

The anime special is based on Keiji Ando's spinoff novel to the game, which was released in October 2021. The story centers on Kokorowa, a genius inventor goddess, writer, and Sakuna's best friend. A certain incident forces her to join Sakuna on Hinoe Island and take up farming rice with her.

Kokorowa's Central Role

Kokorowa is also the protagonist of the upcoming spinoff game Sakuna Chronicles: Kokorowa and the Gears of Creation. This highlights her importance in the Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin universe and suggests that she will continue to play a significant role in future installments of the franchise.

Background on Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin

The original Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin game was released for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC in November 2020. XSEED Games released the game in English.

The game's story follows Sakuna, a proud yet lonely harvest goddess who is banished to a dangerous island with a group of outcast humans. Sakuna must tame the island by defeating demons using farm tools as weapons while chaining attacks with her celestial scarf.

Other Media Adaptations

The Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin franchise has expanded beyond the original game to include an anime series, a smartphone game, and a manga adaptation. The smartphone game is titled Tensui no Sakuna Hime: Hinuka Junreitan and will also launch for Steam in Japanese only. The manga adaptation, Tensui no Sakuna Hime: Ikusa Datara no Kamigami, was launched in November 2021 and ended in November 2022.
