PlayStation 5 Reaches Over 90 Million Shipments

PlayStation 5 Reaches New Milestones in Sales and Shipments

Sony has announced impressive figures for the PlayStation 5, showcasing its continued success in the gaming market. The company's latest financial results reveal significant progress in both shipments and sales, solidifying the PS5's position as a leading console.

Impressive Shipment Numbers

According to Sony's consolidated financial results for the fiscal year's third quarter, which ended on December 31, the company has shipped a total of 92.1 million units of the PlayStation 5 console. This substantial number reflects the strong demand for the console and Sony's ability to meet production and distribution challenges.

Holiday Season Performance

Between October 1 and December 31, Sony shipped 8 million PS5 units. This period, which includes the holiday season, is typically a high-demand period for consumer electronics, and the PS5's performance demonstrates its popularity as a gift item and entertainment device.

Sales Milestones

The PS5 has reached several significant sales milestones. By August 2025, the console had surpassed 80 million shipments. Earlier, in December 2023, the PS5 had already exceeded 50 million in sales. These figures highlight the sustained interest and adoption of the console among gamers worldwide.

Fastest-Selling Console

The PlayStation 5 has achieved the title of Sony's fastest-selling console. As of July 2021, Sony had sold over 10 million units worldwide since its launch. This rapid sales pace underscores the PS5's appeal and its ability to capture the attention of the gaming community.

Continued Growth

The PS5's sales have continued to climb steadily. By June 2022, Sony had sold over 20 million units worldwide. This momentum continued into 2023, with the console crossing 30 million units in sales by January and then surpassing the 40 million mark in July.

Launch and Pricing

The PlayStation 5 was initially launched in several key markets, including the United States, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea on November 12, 2020. A wider global release followed on November 19, 2020. The standard PS5 model retails for US$499.99, while the PS5 Digital Edition, which does not include an optical disc drive, is priced at US$399.99.

New Model Introduction

Sony introduced a new, smaller model of the PS5, intended to replace the original version. This new model was rolled out in various territories between November and early December 2023.

PlayStation 5 Pro

The PlayStation 5 Pro console was released in November 2024, offering enhanced features and performance. The PS5 Pro includes PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, support for 120 FPS, advanced ray tracing capabilities, a 2TB SSD, an upgraded GPU with "28% faster memory," and AI-driven upscaling to improve image clarity.

Japan-Exclusive Digital Edition

Sony released a new model of the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition in Japan that is designed specifically for the Japanese market, featuring only Japanese language support. This model is priced lower than the multi-language Digital Edition, at 55,000 yen (approximately US$355), compared to the current Digital Edition model's price of 72,980 yen (approximately US$471) in Japan.

Price Adjustments

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has made adjustments to the pricing of the PS5 in various regions. Last August, SIE raised the price of the PS5 in the U.S. from US$499.99 to US$549.99, the PS5 Digital Edition from US$449.99 to US$499.99, and the PS5 Pro from US$699.99 to US$749.99, citing "a challenging economic environment."

Regional Price Increases

In April 2025, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) increased the price of some PS5 consoles in "select markets" in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. However, the price of the PS5 Pro in these regions remained unchanged.

Price Hike in Japan

SIE also increased the suggested retail price of the PS5 console and its related peripherals in Japan in September 2024. The company attributed the price changes to severe external conditions, including recent changes in the global economic situation.
