Crunchyroll Manga App Details
The Crunchyroll Manga app was launched on October 9 for iOS and Android devices in the United States and Canada. A browser version followed on October 15, expanding accessibility to users on different platforms. The app operates independently from the main Crunchyroll streaming service and is ad-free, offering a focused reading experience.
Subscription Benefits
Existing subscribers to Crunchyroll's Ultimate Fan subscription tier, priced at US$15.99, can access the manga service without any additional cost. Subscribers on the Fan and Mega Fan tiers have the option to add access to the app. The Fan tier requires an additional US$4.00 USD/CA$5.50, bringing the total to US$11.99/CA$15.49. The Mega Fan tier requires an additional US$3.50/CA$5.00, totaling US$15.49/CA$17.49.
Partnership and Technology
Crunchyroll describes the manga service as "powered by Link-U Group." This Japanese media company operates various services, including digital manga site Comikey, digital manga store Compass, webtoon company Studio Moon6, and VTuber and streaming production company Romanz. This collaboration suggests a robust technological infrastructure and a deep understanding of the digital manga landscape.
The app also boasts several partner publishers, including AlphaPolis, Compass, Square Enix, Viz Media, Yen Press, Shueisha, J-Novel Club, and ThirdlineNEXT. This diverse range of partnerships further strengthens the app's content library and appeal.
App Features
The Crunchyroll Manga app offers a range of features designed to enhance the reading experience. These include compatibility with mobile, tablet, and browser platforms, allowing users to access their manga on various devices. The ability to download chapters for offline reading is a significant advantage for users who want to read on the go without relying on a constant internet connection.
The app also includes light and dark mode options, catering to different reading preferences and lighting conditions. Full-page spreads allow for a more immersive visual experience, while the ability to create a personalized reading list with recommendations helps users discover new titles and keep track of their favorites.
Previous Manga Service
This is not Crunchyroll's first venture into the world of digital manga. The company launched its initial Crunchyroll Manga service in October 2013, offering simulpub titles from Kodansha USA Publishing in over 170 countries. However, the service underwent changes over the years. In February 2018, 14 simulpub titles were removed, followed by the removal of 10 catalog titles in March 2018.
Kodansha USA Publishing subsequently removed a number of its manga titles from Crunchyroll in January 2023. Kodansha stated that its suspension of simulpub updates was due to "changes" in its simulpub distribution program. Crunchyroll ultimately ended its first Crunchyroll Manga service in December 2023.
This new iteration of the Crunchyroll Manga app represents a fresh start for the company in the digital manga space, building upon its previous experience and leveraging new partnerships and technologies. The addition of J-Novel Club titles is a significant step in establishing a comprehensive and appealing manga platform for its users.
