Chie Shinohara's beloved shojo manga, Red River (Sora wa Akai Kawa no Hotori), is set to receive a television anime adaptation courtesy of Tatsunoko Production. The announcement, made on Sunday, has generated considerable excitement among fans of the classic manga. The anime is scheduled to premiere this summer, promising a fresh take on the historical fantasy story.

Shinohara herself commemorated the occasion with a special illustration, further fueling anticipation for the upcoming series. The project brings together a talented team to bring the world of Red River to life.

Production Team and Staff Details

Kōsuke Kobayashi, known for his work on Waccha PriMagi! and Alice or Alice, will be directing the anime at Tatsunoko Production. Yoriko Tomita, whose previous credits include The Elusive Samurai and My Dress-Up Darling, is in charge of overseeing the series scripts, ensuring a cohesive and engaging narrative. Kenji Fujisaki, who worked on YU-NO: A girl who chants love at the bound of this world and Blood Lad, is designing the characters, promising a visually appealing adaptation.

To ensure historical accuracy, the production team is collaborating with historical researchers Kimiyoshi Matsumura and Daisuke Yoshida. They are both members of the Japanese Institute of Anatolian Archaeology, which is part of the Middle Eastern Culture Center in Japan. Their expertise will help to create an authentic backdrop for the story.

Red River Manga Synopsis

Red River tells the story of Yuri, a Japanese girl who experiences a dramatic shift in her life after passing her college entrance exam and sharing her first kiss. Strange occurrences begin to plague her, with water reacting whenever she is near. One fateful night, hands emerge from a puddle and drag her into the depths. She finds herself transported to an ancient village in the Middle East.

Yuri is quickly captured by armed troops and taken to the Queen's palace, where she is intended as a human sacrifice. The manga follows Yuri's journey as she navigates this unfamiliar and dangerous world, facing political intrigue, romance, and the constant threat of death.

English Release of the Manga

Viz Media has been instrumental in bringing Red River to English-speaking audiences. They initially released the manga in 28 volumes between 2004 and 2010. Recognizing the manga's enduring popularity, Viz Media began re-releasing the series in 3-in-1 omnibus editions in October 2024. The seventh omnibus volume is scheduled for release on April 21, making the series more accessible to new readers and long-time fans alike.

Manga's History and Influence

Chie Shinohara originally serialized Red River from 1995 to 2002 in Shogakukan's Shōjo Comic (Sho-Comi) magazine. The manga gained a large following for its compelling story, well-developed characters, and its blend of historical fiction and fantasy elements.

In 2018, the manga's popularity was further cemented when it inspired a stage play by the Takarazuka Revue, a renowned all-female musical theater troupe. This adaptation brought the story to a new audience and showcased the manga's broad appeal.
