Nippon Sangoku: A New Anime Series Coming to Prime Video

The anime series Nippon Sangoku: The Three Nations of the Crimson Sun, adapted from Ikka Matsuki's manga, is set to debut on Amazon Prime Video on April 5. It will be available in over 240 countries and territories. The English-dubbed trailer was released by Amazon Prime Video on Friday. The series will also premiere on television in Japan on April 6. Amazon Prime Video is the exclusive distributor outside of Japan.

Cast and Characters

The Japanese voice cast includes Kensho Ono as Aoteru Misumi, Asami Seto as Saki Higashimachi, and Takashi Nagasako as Denki Taira. Jun Fukuyama voices Yoshitsune Asama, Kazuhiro Yamaji voices Mitsuhide Ryumon, and Yuichi Nakamura voices Yasuaki Kaku. Taihi Kimura plays Fuji III, Minami Tsuda plays Ohga Wajima, and Megumi Han is the narrator.

Production Team

Kazuaki Terasawa is directing the anime at Studio Kafka. Takahiko Abiru is designing the characters and also serves as the chief animation director. Teruko Utsumi is in charge of the series scripts. Seiki Tamura is the art director, and Kevin Penkin is composing the music. Yuko Kobari is the color key artist. Hayato Kifune is the compositing director of photography. Kana Kato is responsible for 2D/special effects. Kotoha Kiriyama is the calligrapher. Daisuke Imai is handling the editing. Kohei Ogawa is the 3D director. Shoji Hata is the sound director. Noriko Izumo is creating the sound effects. Sound Team Don Juan is in charge of sound production.

Theme Song

Tatsuya Kitani performs the anime's opening theme song, "Hidane."

Story Synopsis

Twin Engine, the anime's producer, describes the anime's setting as a near-future Japan that has suffered from nuclear war, natural disasters, and corrupt governance, leading to a regression of civilization. The nation is divided into three factions, creating a new Three Kingdoms era as they compete for dominance. The story follows Aoteru Misumi, a previously unknown local bureaucrat, who aims to reunify Japan. Equipped with extensive knowledge and exceptional communication skills, he gradually gains power. The series tells the story of the man who would become known as a prodigious strategist.

Manga Origins

Ikka Matsuki launched the manga on Shogakukan's Manga ONE app and Ura Sunday website in 2021. Shogakukan published the manga's sixth compiled book volume in November 2024.

Awards and Recognition

The manga was listed in Da Vinci news magazine's 23rd annual "Book of the Year" list and was nominated for the 16th Manga Taisho awards in 2023. It was also included in the top 20 manga for male readers in the 2023 edition of Takarajimasha's Kono Manga ga Sugoi! guidebook.
