1st New Made in Abyss Anime Film's Teaser Unveils More Staff, Fall Opening


Made in Abyss Film Trilogy Announced, Kevin Penkin Returns

The world of Made in Abyss is expanding with a new film trilogy, and fans are eagerly anticipating the first installment, Made in Abyss: Awakening Mystery. A teaser trailer debuted at the "Made in Abyss Film Concert," revealing key staff members and a release window for the first film.

Production Team Unveiled

The film boasts a talented team, with several familiar names returning to bring the Abyss to life. Takeshi Takakura will serve as Design Leader, ensuring the visual consistency and artistic direction of the film. The art direction will be helmed by Osamu Masuyama, Teru Sekiguchi, and Asaki Nakamura from Inspired, promising a visually stunning and immersive experience. Miyao Yamashita is on board as Color Key Artist, defining the color palette and mood of the film. Tsunetaka Ema from T2 Studio will serve as Compositing Director of Photography, enhancing the visuals with their expertise. Masayuki Kurosawa will be responsible for editing, while Haru Yamada will direct the sound, creating an auditory landscape to complement the visuals. Sound effects will be crafted by Tōru Noguchi, and the beloved composer Kevin Penkin is returning to score the film, a welcome announcement for fans of the series' iconic music. Hiromitsu Iijima will be the Music Producer, with IRMA LA DOUCE handling music production and Kadokawa collaborating on music production.

Returning Staff and Studio

Masayuki Kojima, known for his work on Black Bullet and Tibetan Dog, will be directing the anime at Kinema Citrus, the studio behind My Happy Marriage and The Rising of The Shield Hero. Hideyuki Kurata, who has written for Samurai Flamenco and The World God Only Knows, is returning to handle the scripts. Kazuchika Kise and Yuka Kuroda are also returning as character designers, ensuring the characters retain their distinctive looks.

Familiar Voices Return

The core cast members are reprising their roles, bringing their beloved characters back to the screen. Mariya Ise will voice Reg, Miyu Tomita will voice Riko, Shiori Izawa will voice Nanachi, and Misaki Kuno will voice Faputa.

A Continuing Journey

Kadokawa announced the sequel to Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun in January 2023. The original 13-episode television anime series premiered in July 2017 and was later licensed by Sentai Filmworks, who released it on Blu-ray Disc in October 2018. The series was also streamed on Amazon's Anime Strike service and HIDIVE. Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun, the second season, premiered in July 2022, concluding in September 2022 with an hour-long finale. HIDIVE streamed the second season, and Sentai Filmworks licensed it for digital and home video release.

Previous Films and Success

Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul premiered in Japan in January 2020, achieving ninth place in its opening weekend and earning 102,284,000 yen. The film received 4DX and MX4D screenings. Sentai Filmworks premiered the movie in select theaters in the U.S. and Canada in August 2020 after delays due to COVID-19. The first compilation film, Made in Abyss: Journey's Dawn, opened in Japan in January 2019, followed by Made in Abyss: Wandering Twilight two weeks later. Sentai Filmworks premiered both films in the U.S., and they are currently streaming on HIDIVE.

Made in Abyss tells the story of an enormous pit and cave system known as the Abyss, the only unexplored place in the world. The Abyss is home to strange and wonderful creatures and precious relics. Adventurers known as Cave Raiders venture into the Abyss to explore its depths. Riko, a young orphan, dreams of becoming a Cave Raider like her mother and solving the mysteries of the Abyss. One day, Riko discovers a robot resembling a human boy.
