Interactive Anime Film "Hypnosis Mic -Division Rap Battle-" Coming to U.S. Theaters

GKIDS has announced that "Hypnosis Mic -Division Rap Battle- Interactive Movie" will be screened in select Regal theaters across the United States on February 27. This film is being touted as Japan's first interactive film, offering a unique viewing experience for anime fans.

In-Theater Polling Technology

The interactive nature of the film is made possible through CtrlMovie's in-theater polling technology. This system allows audience members to use their smartphones to vote on key decisions within the film, influencing the plot's direction, the songs featured, and ultimately, the ending.

A Dynamic and Unique Experience

Each screening of "Hypnosis Mic -Division Rap Battle- Interactive Movie" promises to be different. The winner of the Third Division Rap Battle, as well as the overall narrative, will be determined by the collective choices of the audience in real time. With 48 possible story routes, 16 original songs, and seven potential endings, the film offers a high degree of replayability and ensures a fresh experience with each viewing.

Storyline

The film's story hinges on the audience's choices. As the viewers participate through real-time polling, the storyline evolves, presenting a different narrative path each time. This dynamic approach makes the audience an active participant in shaping the film's events.

Locations

The film will be shown in 15 Regal theaters across the following states: New York, California, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Texas, Florida, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Nevada.

Music

The film features the opening theme song "Hypnosis Mic -Division Battle Anthem-+" performed by the Division All Stars. The interactive movie also has 16 new songs.

Production Team

Takanori Tsujimoto, known for directing "Resident Evil: Vendetta," directed the film at Polygon Pictures. Yūichirō Momose, who played a key role in developing the franchise's story setting, characters, and game events, wrote the script. Kazui returned as the character designer. TOHO NEXT is distributing the film. A-1 Pictures animated the previous television anime with a different main staff.

Hypnosis Mic Project

The Hypnosis Mic project, created by King Records, is a rap-themed franchise featuring voice actors who perform in the roles of original characters. The project launched in September 2017 and has since expanded to include multiple manga tie-ins, a mobile game, stage plays, and live events.

Popularity

Hypnosis Mic quickly gained popularity, with the first full album, "Enter the Hypnosis Microphone," launching in April 2018. The project's official Twitter account became the most popular voice actor account in Japan for 2018.

Anime Adaptations

The Hypnosis Mic franchise has also been adapted into an anime series. The first season, "Hypnosis Mic -Division Rap Battle- Rhyme Anima," premiered in October 2020. The second season, "HYPNOSISMIC -Division Rap Battle- Rhyme Anima PLUS," premiered in October 2023. Funimation streamed the first season, while Crunchyroll streamed the second season as they aired.

Smartphone Games

The Hypnosis Mic universe has expanded into the realm of mobile gaming as well. The "Hypnosis Mic -Alternative Rap Battle-" smartphone game was released in March 2020. More recently, the "Hypnosis Mic -Dream Rap Battle-" smartphone game debuted in November 2024.

Japanese Premiere

"Hypnosis Mic -Division Rap Battle- Interactive Movie" initially premiered in Japan in February 2025.
