From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman Anime Returns for Season 2

The television anime adaptation of Shigeru Sagazaki's light novel series, "From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman" (Katainaka no Ossan, Kensei ni Naru: Tada no Inaka no Kenjutsu Shihan Datta noni, Taisei Shita Deshitachi ga Ore o Hōttekurenai Ken), is set to premiere its second season in July 2026. The staff has released a teaser visual and the first promotional video to generate excitement among fans.

Premiere Date and Broadcasting Details

The second season will debut on TV Asahi and its affiliates, as well as on BS Asahi, in July 2026. This information provides fans with a concrete timeline for the continuation of the series.

Returning Staff

The core staff from the first season will be returning to ensure continuity and maintain the quality of the production. Akio Kazumi, known for directing "Loner Life in Another World" and "Fist of the Blue Sky Regenesis," will once again helm the series at Passione and Hayabusa Film. Kunihiko Okada, who handled the series scripts for "The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy" and "By the Grace of the Gods" season 2, is also back in charge of the scriptwriting. Satsuki Hayasaka, responsible for character design in "The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy" and "Yatogame-chan Kansatsu Nikki," will reprise her role as character designer and chief animation director. Yasuharu Takanashi, the composer behind the music for "Baki Hanma vs. Kengan Ashura" and "Fairy Tail," will be composing the music for the second season.

Additional Staff Members

Several other staff members are also returning to contribute their expertise. Nozomu Koga, the art director from the first season, and Masaru Kawashima will serve as assistant directors. Suzume Shima and Ley Yumeno will handle conceptual design. Sakie Suzuki will be the color key artist. Taiki Yamashita will be the art director. Kenichi Ikeda will be the compositing director of photography. YAMATO WORKS will be responsible for 3D animation production. Ayako Tan will handle editing. Hisayoshi Hirasawa will be the sound director.

First Season Recap

The first season of the anime premiered in April 2025 and is exclusively available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video worldwide. This accessibility allows fans to easily catch up on the story before the second season airs.

Original Light Novel

Shigeru Sagazaki launched the story on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō website in November 2020. Square Enix is publishing the novel volumes with illustrations by Tetsuhiro Nabeshima. This information provides context on the origin of the anime.

J-Novel Club's Synopsis

J-Novel Club licensed the novel series and provides the following synopsis: Beryl Gardinant, a self-proclaimed “humble old man,” is a sword instructor at his dojo in a rural, backwater village. In his younger years, he dreamed of glory as a master swordsman, but those days are long behind him. Out of the blue, he receives a visit from a famous former pupil who brings him world-shattering news—he's been appointed as special instructor for the knights of the Liberion Order! With his life now turned upside down, Beryl travels to the capital and reunites with some of his former students: elite knights, an ace wizard, and even an adventurer who's attained the highest guild rank possible. But why do they all want his tutelage?! As far as he's concerned, they clearly don't need him anymore. Can Beryl live up to his new position? And will he ever get a moment's peace away from his adoring students?!

Manga Adaptation

Kazuki Satō launched the novels' manga adaptation in Akita Shoten's Dokodemo Young Champion magazine in August 2021. Yen Press releases the manga in English. This offers fans an alternative way to experience the story.

Spinoff Manga: The Beginning of a Magic Swordsman

A spinoff manga titled "Katainaka no Ossan, Kensei ni Naru Gaiden: Hajimari no Mahō Kenshi" (From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman Spinoff: The Beginning of a Magic Swordsman) launched on Square Enix's Manga UP! service in November 2024. Shigeru Sagazaki and Tetsuhiro Nabeshima are credited with the original work. Itsuki Watanabe is credited for composition. Megumu Soramichi is drawing the manga.

Spinoff Manga: Ryūsōken no Kiseki

A separate spinoff manga titled "Katainaka no Ossan, Kensei ni Naru Gaiden: Ryūsōken no Kiseki" debuted in Square Enix's Young Gangan magazine in February 2025. Sasami Hazama is drawing the art. Zenji Yotsuya is credited for composition. The manga follows the character Surena Lysandra in her journey to become a Black Rank adventurer.
