Kuromi Shines: Sanrio's Mischievous Icon Gets Her Own Film!
Big news from the Sanrio universe! Fans everywhere are buzzing with excitement following the announcement that Kuromi, the beloved rival to My Melody and a character who has carved her own massive niche, will be starring in her very first feature film. The reveal, perfectly timed for Halloween – which also happens to be Kuromi's birthday – has set the stage for a new chapter in the mischievous character's journey. Distributor GAGA is set to release "Kuromi the Movie" in Japan next year, marking a significant milestone for the punk-rock princess of Sanrio.
From Sidekick to Superstar: Kuromi's Rise to Fame
Kuromi didn't start her career in her own dedicated merchandise line, a unique beginning that speaks volumes about her organic rise to popularity. She made her memorable debut in the television anime series Onegai My Melody back in April 2005. Initially introduced as My Melody's antagonistic foil, Kuromi quickly captivated audiences with her distinct personality, rebellious charm, and surprisingly soft spots. Her character resonated deeply with fans, propelling her from a supporting role to a bonafide icon in her own right. This popularity isn't just anecdotal; Kuromi has consistently ranked in the top five of the highly competitive Sanrio Character Ranking poll for the last six consecutive years, a testament to her enduring appeal and a clear indicator of the demand for more of her captivating presence.
Pre-Movie Adventures: A History in Animation
Before her big-screen debut, Kuromi has been no stranger to animated storytelling. Her path to cinematic stardom has been paved with several successful net anime series, showcasing her versatility and growing narrative depth. In 2023 and 2024, fans were treated to two delightful series of Kuromi's Pretty Journey anime shorts, which further explored her world and adventures. Adding to her animated portfolio, a charming stop-motion anime titled My Melody & Kuromi premiered on Netflix in July 2025. These projects have not only kept Kuromi in the public eye but have also allowed her character to develop and evolve, building anticipation for what a full-length feature film can offer. These experiences undoubtedly provide a rich foundation for her first movie, promising a production that is both familiar to long-time fans and exciting for new viewers.
