The annual Anime Expo is a whirlwind of excitement, delivering massive news about upcoming anime series that fans eagerly await. While blockbuster video game titles like Echoes of Aincrad: Sword Art Online, Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, and Granblue Fantasy: Relink - Endless Ragnarok rightfully grab headlines, it is often the innovative and fresh experiences from smaller developers and publishers that truly capture the spirit of discovery. These hidden gems, though perhaps less known, are poised to make a significant impact on the gaming landscape. We dove deep into the recent announcements to bring you a closer look at these promising new anime-style games that deserve your attention.
Ninjala 2: The Uncharted Planet
Ninjala, the original game, found its niche as a charming sleeper hit with a dedicated following and even an accompanying anime series. Now, its successor, Ninjala 2: The Uncharted Planet, is taking an exciting new direction. Unlike the first game's PvP focus, Ninjala 2 is a cooperative PvE adventure set in a vibrant open world. While its colorful aesthetic might draw comparisons to Nintendo's Splatoon, Ninjala 2 carves out its own identity by having players confront formidable and unique bosses rather than engaging in competitive ink-slinging. The premise is intriguing: players, after accidentally breaking a forbidden seal, find themselves stranded on an unknown planet. Their mission is to defeat the myriad threats lurking there and ultimately find a path back to Earth. Developed by GungHo Online Entertainment, Inc., Ninjala 2: The Uncharted Planet is slated for release on the highly anticipated Switch 2 console in Spring 2027. This shift to a co-op PvE open-world experience with boss battles promises a fresh take on the Ninjala universe.
Silver Palace
From the innovative Singaporean studio Elementa Games comes Silver Palace, an open-world fantasy action RPG that immediately brings to mind the expansive worlds of Genshin Impact and Wuthering Waves. Fans of these popular titles will likely find much to love here, from the beautifully designed characters to the dazzling, flashy combat animations. What truly helps Silver Palace stand out is its captivating steampunk-fantasy aesthetic, blending intricate clockwork mechanisms with fantastical elements to create a truly unique and eye-catching setting. The game's narrative introduces us to a world teetering between opulence and ruin: In the third year of Queen Feliana's reign, a detective returns to the city of Silvernia, a place where reality and legend intertwine. Players must use diplomacy, deduction, instinct, and steel to uncover the origin of a fatal shot, knowing that their choices will shape not only their own fate but the destiny of many. While no release date has been announced, Elementa Games plans to launch Silver Palace on mobile (iOS and Android) and PC. Enthusiastic players can dive in early, as the 'Dichotomy' Beta Test is currently underway, running until July 16.
Qliphah in Providence's Shadow
Published by the renowned Arc System Works, Qliphah in Providence's Shadow is an ambitious turn-based/action hybrid RPG that promises a truly eclectic gameplay experience. It draws inspiration from titles like The Caligula Effect, Lost Odyssey, and Expedition 33, hinting at a deep and engaging combat system. My time with the demo revealed a fascinating, if initially challenging, combat mechanic where players must match different-colored attacks to specific rings that appear on boss enemies, all within a strategic timeline system. While the demo left me eager for more context, the potential for intricate and rewarding battles is immense, and I am confident the full game will offer a smoother learning curve. The story is set in a post-apocalyptic Tokyo, where the fabric of reality is unraveling, giving rise to monstrous beings and supernatural phenomena. Players follow Soma Hoshigami, a young man who, after a supernatural attack, becomes a "half-transformed" being. He is then taken into custody by Rena Hizuki, an investigator from the Metropolitan Police Department, Public Safety Bureau, Foreign Affairs Section 5, 2nd Anomaly Investigation Unit. Together, Soma and Rena must investigate a growing list of unusual occurrences, including the mysterious "Tiny True" drug, popular "Stigma" patterns appearing on young people, and a shadowy cult. As they uncover more of the story, they will fight powerful enemies and ultimately unravel the mystery behind the world's catastrophic transformation. Qliphah in Providence's Shadow is set to release on September 24, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Steam, and EPIC.
Demons' Night Fever
Another exciting title from Arc System Works, Demons' Night Fever, blends elements from Disgaea and Trillion: God of Destruction, all wrapped in an art style reminiscent of Persona Tactica. At its core, Demons' Night Fever is a unique simulation and strategy game where players are given 30 days to meticulously prepare an army with formidable stats before deploying them in battle. Similar to Qliphah, my initial demo experience was one of inquisitive confusion; I was dropped directly into a battle with minimal context but managed to secure a victory. This intriguing setup only fueled my desire to learn more about the strategic depth and unique mechanics that Demons' Night Fever has to offer. The narrative introduces a different Earth, where Giga Super Death, the most wicked Devil, was on the verge of defeating God when he was suddenly transformed into a helpless infant. Anticipating such a catastrophe, he had developed the "DEMONS' NIGHT FEVER" resurrection program, which now activates. The one ensnared in this peculiar ritual is Killshiro Katanaka, a gloomy young man who harbors a deep disdain for the world. Their shared interests forge a bizarre pact, setting the stage for a story of pure evil starring the Devil himself and his unlikely new disciple, Killshiro. Demons' Night Fever is scheduled for release this year on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and PC, making it one to watch out for soon.
Drunken Goddess Reflux
Drunken Goddess Reflux is an incredibly creative roguelite Russian roulette game that draws inspiration from the likes of Balatro and Inscryption, offering a truly fresh take on deck-building and chance-based mechanics. The objective is delightfully mischievous: you aim to get a cute demonic bartender drunk before you succumb to losing yourself. Players select different shot glasses, each with a hidden value, and drink them, hoping the revealed number is lower than their opponent's. Adding layers of strategy are various cards with unique effects and rules that keep each drinking match dynamic and unpredictable. As you consistently win and level up, the demonic bartender's tolerance grows, ensuring the challenge remains steep. From what I experienced in the demo, Drunken Goddess Reflux is a fantastic concept that still requires some polish, but its core loop is undeniably engaging. The official trailer teases a high-stakes drinking survival challenge: "Face off against a demon who loves you enough to kill you... Break the rules as you drink in this twisted game of Russian roulette. Push the demon past her limits and make her spill everything!" Alliance Arts Inc. has yet to announce a specific release window for Drunken Goddess Reflux, but its innovative gameplay and dark humor make it a title to eagerly anticipate.
