AIC Secures Shareholder Status in Landmark Legal Victory
Anime International Company (AIC) has announced a significant win in a civil suit against AIC Rights and producer Yoshikazu Maeda. The July 3 announcement confirms that AIC is now recognized as a legitimate shareholder of AIC Rights, bringing a definitive close to a legal battle that commenced in August 2021.
The core of the dispute revolved around AIC's demand for the return of its shares in AIC Rights. AIC Rights, however, contested this, arguing that Yoshikazu Maeda had already sold his shares to a third party, thereby ceasing to be a shareholder himself and leaving no shares for AIC Rights to return to AIC. This intricate corporate dispute set the stage for a protracted legal journey.
The Legal Battle's Resolution
The judicial process saw the case progress through multiple courts. The Tokyo District Court initially sided with AIC in March 2025, ruling in its favor. Undeterred, AIC Rights and Maeda promptly filed an appeal with the Tokyo High Court. However, the High Court affirmed the District Court's original decision in July 2025, upholding AIC's claim.
Maeda then pursued a final appeal to the Supreme Court. In a decisive move, the Supreme Court refused to accept the appeal on May 27 earlier this year, effectively affirming the initial ruling once again. This refusal marks the conclusive end to the two-time appealed lawsuit, solidifying AIC's position as a shareholder in AIC Rights.
Understanding AIC Rights' Origins and IP Portfolio
AIC Rights was established through a company split from AIC in 2015. This corporate restructuring saw a significant portion of AIC's valuable intellectual property transferred to the newly formed AIC Rights. Following this separation, AIC Rights became actively involved in producing new anime content based on these acquired legacy properties. Notable productions include Battle Athletes Victory ReSTART! and Tenchi Muyo! Ryo Ohki (the 2016 and 2020 iterations), leveraging the rich history of AIC's creative assets.
Shared Ownership of Iconic Anime Franchises
Further adding to the complex landscape of intellectual property ownership, AIC Rights entered into an agreement in April 2021 with Toei Agency. This partnership led to the transfer of partial ownership of several key copyrights, resulting in joint ownership between the two companies. The extensive list of jointly owned IPs features beloved and influential franchises such as Megazone 23, Hades Project Zeorymer, Dangaioh, the Bubblegum Crisis franchise, the Gall Force franchise, and the sprawling Tenchi Muyo! franchise.
This legal victory for AIC not only reaffirms its corporate standing but also highlights the critical importance of intellectual property and shareholder rights within the dynamic and often intricate business world of the anime industry. The resolution of this suit could have broader implications for how anime studios manage and defend their creative legacies.
