New Minky Momo OVA Anime: Akogare no Yume e Duo Details

The magical girl world is buzzing with excitement as a brand new original video anime (OVA) for the beloved Fairy Princess Minky Momo franchise has been officially announced! Titled Mahō no Princess Minky Momo Akogare no Yume e Magokoro no Duo (Fairy Princess Minky Momo A Duo of Sincerity Toward a Dream of Longing), this highly anticipated return is set to grace theaters this year.

A Long-Awaited Return to Minky Momo's World

The official website for the new Minky Momo OVA has opened, revealing not only the full title but also a teaser trailer, key staff information, and a super teaser video. This marks a monumental moment for fans, as it's the first new Minky Momo animation since Minky Momo in The Station of Your Memories in 1994, a staggering 32 years ago. The enduring legacy of this enchanting magical girl series is once again ready to captivate a new generation while delighting long-time enthusiasts.

Unveiling the New Adventure's Plot

The new Minky Momo OVA plunges us into a fresh, urgent narrative. The story unfolds in Diginarsa, a realm built on dreams and hopes, sustained entirely by dream energy. However, Diginarsa faces an existential threat: humans on Earth are losing their dreams and hopes, causing the vital dream energy to dwindle, pushing the land to the brink of disappearance. In a desperate final plea, Diginarsa's benevolent king dispatches his three trusted companions—Chamocha, Dettabook, and Pipirupi—to seek the legendary Minky Momo's aid.

Our new protagonist is a young girl named Momo, who, on her 12th birthday, receives a modern-day gift: a smartphone. This seemingly ordinary present becomes extraordinary when she encounters the king's companions. Through this fateful meeting, Momo awakens as the iconic Minky Momo, immediately resolving to embark on a quest to save Diginarsa and restore humanity's fading dreams. As Momo diligently begins gathering dream energy, a peculiar new app rapidly gains traction across the city. Children are flocking to this app, but the dreams they articulate within it are superficial—driven purely by desires for recognition or inflated viewing numbers. This shift in the nature of dreams causes Momo to pause and critically question the very essence of everyone's aspirations.

The Talented Team Behind the Magic

A stellar team of creators is bringing this new Minky Momo adventure to life. Ayumu Watanabe, renowned for his work on series such as Witch Hat Atelier, Akane-banashi, and Space Brothers, is directing the anime at Ashi Production. This choice signals a commitment to quality and imaginative storytelling.

Character designs are in capable hands, with Hiroshi Watanabe, the main animator from the original 1982-1983 anime, joining forces with Mari Tominaga, a key animator from Minky Momo in The Station of Your Memories. Their combined expertise promises a design aesthetic that honors the franchise's roots while introducing a fresh appeal.

Deko Akao, known for her scripts in Arakawa Under the Bridge two seasons and Pretty Rhythm Aurora Dream, is penning the script, ensuring a compelling and engaging storyline. Sound direction is handled by Katsunori Shimizu (Magical Girl Ore, Citrus), with Zack Promotion overseeing sound production. The enchanting musical score is composed by Tomoki Hasegawa, who previously worked on Minky Momo in The Station of Your Memories and Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?!. Studio Live is credited for design cooperation, and the distribution is handled by MOVIC and Giggly Box.

A Look Back at the Minky Momo Legacy

Fairy Princess Minky Momo first graced screens with its original television anime series from 1982 to 1983. The series introduced audiences to a princess from a magical world sent to Earth to help people rediscover their lost hopes and dreams. Armed with her magic and accompanied by her loyal magical dog, monkey, and bird, Minky—known on Earth as “Gigi”—embarked on countless amazing adventures. William Winckler Productions launched an English-dubbed release of this foundational series on Amazon Instant Video in 2015, allowing a broader audience to experience its charm.

The initial series proved immensely popular, inspiring a television series followup from 1991 to 1992, alongside several OVAs. One notable OVA, Fairy Princess Minky Momo: La ronde in my dream, was released in English by Harmony Gold USA as Gigi and the Fountain of Youth. More recently, Crunchyroll began streaming the original television anime in January 2024, making it accessible to contemporary viewers and solidifying its place in anime history. With this new OVA, the Minky Momo franchise continues its magical journey, promising another heartfelt story of dreams, hope, and the power of a magical girl's sincerity.
