Ghost in the Shell Director Mamoru Oshii Logs Over 8,000 Hours in Fallout 4

Mamoru Oshii's Gaming Obsession: A Deep Dive into Fallout 4 and More
Mamoru Oshii, the renowned director of Ghost in the Shell, recently unveiled his gaming habits in a video streamed on the franchise's official YouTube channel. In a segment titled "30 Questions with Director Mamoru Oshii," he revealed his favorite game and shared anecdotes about his experiences with other titles.
Fallout 4: An Eight-Year Love Affair
Oshii declared Fallout 4 as his absolute favorite, stating that he has been playing it for over eight years. His dedication to the game is staggering, with his Steam account showing approximately 8,000 hours logged. Considering his playtime on PlayStation, Oshii estimates that he may have spent over 10,000 hours exploring the post-apocalyptic wasteland.
He mentioned briefly playing Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding but always returning to Fallout 4. Oshii explained that he focuses on new Kojima releases when they debut but otherwise dedicates his gaming time to Fallout 4.
A Dabble in PUBG and a Quick Retirement from Virtua Fighter
Oshii also revealed his brief foray into the popular battle royale game PUBG, where he managed to accumulate around 250 hours. He proudly recounted achieving a "legendary Chicken Dinner," even taking a photo to commemorate the victory.
However, Oshii expressed reservations about online multiplayer games, stating his preference for solo play. He dislikes the idea of being defeated by unknown players.
The director also shared a story about his past obsession with Virtua Fighter. He played the game extensively while directing Ghost in the Shell, transitioning to Virtua Fighter 2 upon its release. However, his Virtua Fighter career came to an abrupt end after a humiliating defeat by a junior high school student.
The Appeal of V.A.T.S. and Wasteland Wanderings
Oshii emphasized the importance of the V.A.T.S. system in Fallout 4 for his enjoyment. He believes he would not have been able to play the game without it. The V.A.T.S. system slows down the action, allowing players to target specific body parts of enemies.
He described the appeal of exploring the wasteland with a dog and a rifle, considering it a perfect fit for his gaming preferences.
Modding Mishaps and Update Woes
Oshii expressed frustration with a recent game update that caused him to lose a significant portion of his Fallout 4 mods. He lamented the effort required to reset the game after the update.
Ghost in the Shell Anniversary and Future Projects
The "30 Questions with Director Mamoru Oshii" video was released as part of the 30th anniversary celebration of the Ghost in the Shell film, based on Masamune Shirow's manga.
Science SARU's new The Ghost in the Shell television anime series is set to premiere in July.
